Buy plasma now, or are prices dropping over Thanksgiving?
 

I want to get a TV this week... but are we going to see any further
discounting on plasmas over this Holiday shopping season, which starts in a
few weeks?

Wouldn't surprise me, since prices are coming down on all the HDTV sets
continuously and the Friday after Thanksgiving is the biggest sale day of
the retail year.

Remember that expensive TV's have become like cars -- smart people negotiate
the prices. Shop for what you want and ask for the best possible price at
each outlet and write it down. If possible, get them to write it down.
Collect these prices. Either take the best one, after adding in other
considerations (such as the trustworthiness of the retailer) or take your
best price to Sears. If they have or can get the set, they will match your
best price + 10% of the difference. But no matter how you do it, don't even
consider paying the "sticker price".

For the long term, one thing to keep in the back of your mind is the value
of the US dollar. The US dollar is still quite high but balancing
precariously, very likely to drop in the future and possibly fall off the
edge of a cliff as our stupendous debt scares off the foreign investors and
drives them to Euros and other currencies. No way to predict, but the
general trend for the dollar from here is most likely downward. This means
higher prices for goods from overseas, like TV sets.

That day is usually when the most people show up in stores, but it hasn't
been the biggest dollar sale day of the year for a while, and it isn't the
best day to get bargains. Usually, very near the end of the year or just
after the beginning is a good time because of inventory tax concerns. The
other good time is when new TV models come out, and "last year's model" is
on sale.

I think a big time for TV sales is in January, leading up to the
Superbowl.

Not sure if there are bargains but there certainly are a lot of
promotions like don't pay for 2 years type of deals.
