For the h264 samples I would say yes, but then I don't know the specs of your PC. Many samples are high bitrate HEVC (h265) these are far harder currently for a PC. ffmpegs hevc decoder is not as optimised as it could be. The very latest Intel CPUs and AMD/Nvidia APUs and GPUs have some hardware decoding capability, but I don't know how well it works and 10 bit samples don't seem to be supported. |

I have tried playing with VLC and it nearly works. I get bits of the image on the screen if I pause the display and then move back a little bit. My screen does 2560*1440 driven by an AMD Radeon HD 5670. -- Michael Chare |

FYI PC AMD A8-7600 on Asrock A88X Extreme6+ MB, 8Gb RAM, on board graphics s/w Win 8.1pro, AMD drivers BB BT I2 via wired Hub5 display port to Iiyama monitor [email protected] |

Not really in the same league as a lot of UHD though. 30 fps, 11 mbit h264 or 8 mbit VP9, on my old phenom II 965 I can decode those at 120/99 fps. If your browser uses google webm decoder for VP9 you won't be as fast though, that was with ffmpeg which is quite a bit faster. 60 fps 50 mbit hevc, like some demos are, is a lot more challenging! For those with in between res screens like the OP at least youtube has some variety - youtube-dl --list-formats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3afEX8a2jPg [youtube] 3afEX8a2jPg: Downloading webpage [youtube] 3afEX8a2jPg: Extracting video information [youtube] 3afEX8a2jPg: Downloading DASH manifest [info] Available formats for 3afEX8a2jPg: format code extension resolution note 249 webm audio only DASH audio , opus @ 50k 250 webm audio only DASH audio , opus @ 70k 251 webm audio only DASH audio , opus @160k 171 webm audio only DASH audio 126k , [email protected] (44100Hz), 879.61KiB 140 m4a audio only DASH audio 127k , m4a_dash container, aac @128k (44100Hz), 951.82KiB 278 webm 256x144 DASH video 93k , webm container, VP9, 15fps, video only, 641.91KiB 160 mp4 256x144 DASH video 110k , 15fps, video only, 815.98KiB 242 webm 426x240 DASH video 121k , 30fps, video only, 647.59KiB 243 webm 640x360 DASH video 206k , 30fps, video only, 1.13MiB 133 mp4 426x240 DASH video 245k , 30fps, video only, 1.78MiB 134 mp4 640x360 DASH video 260k , 30fps, video only, 1.62MiB 244 webm 854x480 DASH video 340k , 30fps, video only, 1.80MiB 135 mp4 854x480 DASH video 530k , 30fps, video only, 3.43MiB 247 webm 1280x720 DASH video 626k , 30fps, video only, 3.48MiB 136 mp4 1280x720 DASH video 1011k , 30fps, video only, 6.77MiB 248 webm 1920x1080 DASH video 1155k , 30fps, video only, 6.79MiB 137 mp4 1920x1080 DASH video 1968k , 30fps, video only, 12.47MiB 271 webm 2560x1440 DASH video 4125k , 30fps, video only, 20.36MiB 264 mp4 2560x1440 DASH video 6083k , 30fps, video only, 32.42MiB 313 webm 3840x2160 DASH video 10553k , VP9, 30fps, video only, 54.70MiB 266 mp4 3840x2160 DASH video 15625k , h264, 30fps, video only, 76.47MiB 17 3gp 176x144 36 3gp 320x240 5 flv 400x240 43 webm 640x360 18 mp4 640x360 22 mp4 1280x720 (best) |

My screen does 2560*1440 driven by an AMD Radeon HD 5670. There is quite a variety of samples. HEVC probably just can't be decoded fast enough. H264 probably can, but your hardware won't decode above HD so it's up to your CPU. I am not really familiar with VLC on Windows but if you can't quite play some H264 sample it may be worth messing around with/checking some settings so that at least the scale and colour space conversion is done on GPU. This may already be the case of course. |
