iPlayer on Panasonic TV not working today
We have a Panasonic Veira TV about 4 years old, which has been happily
showing us past BBC programmes via its built-in iPlayer software and an Ethernet cable to our broadband router. It also needs a satellite connection (for some reason I've never understood) but that still works fine on other channels. Today when I connect to Freesat channel 901 I don't get the usual iPlayer home page but just a message across the screen saying "Data channel". I've done a Freesat channel rescan but this makes no difference. The software is up-to-date it claims. So I'm baffled. I have made no changes at my end and it worked fine two days ago, so I guess this is the result of BBC tinkering. Has anyone else got a Panasonic TV showing similar symptoms? -- Clive Page |

So far so good. It also needs a satellite connection So it's a Freesat TV (Satellite Tuner). (for some reason I've never understood) So it's a Freeview TV (Terrestrial Tuner). but that still works fine on other channels. Or is it? If your TV has a Terrestrial tuner and has a network cable attached to your router, and carries iPlayer, then this has no relevance to sat channel 901. Assuming you have a Satellite tuner, my own sat box got a blank screen when I went to channel 901 directly, but after going to 900 first it now works. Perhaps it was broken, and now it's fixed. If your TV is Terrestrial, does the remote have a "Home" button? If it does there should be an "On Demand" option with iPlayer and ITV Player. -- Ian |

As I said, for reasons that I don't understand (maybe it gets its playlists from the FreeSat connection) it does require that a FreeSat connection is working and that the set is tuned to channel 901. Other TVs may do things in another way for all I know. I just tried it again today - same thing, channel 901 gives a very brief iPlayer logo then switches to showing Data Channel. If your TV is Terrestrial, does the remote have a "Home" button? If it does there should be an "On Demand" option with iPlayer and ITV Player. This set can (or could) handle the iPlayer but not the ITV equivalent. I guess a newer TV with newer firmware is needed. -- Clive Page |

Has this just happened? There was an OTA update for Panasonic G10 series TVs on Monday and Tuesday, to fix a Freeview tuning loss issue. Could this be an unintended side-effect?

Well it happened between Sunday and Tuesday, but the model we've got doesn't seem to get automatic updates, and I checked that the s/w version was unchanged. But - miraculously, I just tried again this lunchtime and the iPlayer is working again. Something must have changed back; perhaps somebody managed to find the right bit of the BBC to complain to. Thanks for responding, anyway. -- Clive Page |
