Freeview lets move da channels again..
So what are they up to this time. 5USA suggests its going to move to ch 21
on Wednesday, while a new channel called Spike or similar (why) is going to start, as if we do not have enough already, and does this mean the demise of Viva at last, which has had identity issues for some time. Is this the brodcasting equivelent of a supermarket moving its stock around or what? Brian -- From the Sofa of Brian Gaff Reply address is active |

Brian Personally speaking, I generally only watch HD channels - BBC and Channel 4 News - so it's fairly easy for me! |

Yes. Viva is leaving Freeview and Freesat.
Spike TV is a C5 service. It is described as "male-skewed". It will be a British version of the US Viacom channel of the same name. Viacom is the current owner of the C5 company. There was an announcement of this back in October: quote Spike TV will carry a raft of US factual formats including Eyeworks USA-produced Bar Rescue, which currently airs on 5*, as well as repeats of Channel 5 factual series such as Cowboy Builders and Police Interceptors. In the US, the channel airs edgy reality series such as Dave Navarro-fronted Ink Master Rivals, Tattoo Nightmares: Miami, dude food format Frankenfood and building series To Catch A Contractor. Speaking in the UK for the first time since the C5 acquisition, Viacom president and chief executive Philippe Dauman told the Broadcasting Press Guild that Spike TV will evolve to commission original programming. enquote From this webpage http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/broadc...078408.article On Mon, 13 Apr 2015 09:46:33 +0100, "Brian Gaff" wrote: So what are they up to this time. 5USA suggests its going to move to ch 21 on Wednesday, while a new channel called Spike or similar (why) is going to start, as if we do not have enough already, and does this mean the demise of Viva at last, which has had identity issues for some time. Is this the brodcasting equivelent of a supermarket moving its stock around or what? Brian It is about time Freeviews whole numbering system was sorted out. Yes. I don't really care what channel numbers they use as long as they agree that all existing channels will keep the same numbers for ever and will never move, and that the only changes will be additions and deletions as channels are born or die. Ofcom or whoever manage the allocation of channel numbers should have enforced this from the start: plan ahead for the future, group channels by genre (eg all news in one place, all children's in another, all shopping crap in another, all drama in another), with large gaps for other channels to be fitted in to the appropriate genre. Do that once, when Freeview or ITV Digital or OnDigital first started, and then apply one overriding rule: once a channel has been allocated a number, it keeps it for life, even if it needs to be moved from one mux to another occasionally (though all retuning needs to be kept to an absolute minimum). Is there anywhere on Freeview's text channels or online which alerts people to the need to retune? |

Its basically saying you should not need to retune but if you have an older
receiver, you may have to. In other words, who knows. The problem is that I am given to understand that there are also now standard definition channels planned for the hd multiplexes, and since my old talking box does not have these it won't see the new channels. This whole thing has been handled in a make do and mend fashion since day one. Brian -- From the Sofa of Brian Gaff Reply address is active "NY" wrote in message ... "David" wrote in message ... Why call it Spike, and will content on this new channel have AD?
