Sky threatening debt collectors
 

I decided to cancel Sky. I tried to phone them but got fed up being kept on hold so I cancelled the D/D at the bank. I was then cut off, as expected, 1 month later. Sky are now calling in the debt collectors for the £27 as I didnt give them 1 months notice. What do you think..should I pay or not. I have had letters and phone calls from different agencies and I have pointed out that I dont owe Sky anything as my payment was always 1 month in advance. Any one else had these threats?

Threats or whatever, you are in Breach of Contract so should take
steps to make your peace with Sky or they can take you to court. It
matters not whether you are or were paid up, you did not comply with
the Contract terms and that is legally the end of the matter.

You should *never* cancel a DD in that manner. I'd pay up the 27 quid
ASAP, and clear things, otherwise you're likely to find your credit
rating could be affected, and that can lead to really serious problems.

You did not give the required notice so you do owe them. Cancelling the
DD is not sufficient. Pay up before you get court costs added to the bill.

Yes, you could try offering them the amount left over after spending money
on hold from your mobile to their call centre, say 50p.

Its not just Sky, but really i think we are all bad at not reading terms
and conditions and all that stuff. I think as these things go Sky's was
quite straightforward compared to some you get.
Basically, yes, many not only want a month in advance, but a cancellation
fee if you cannot give them that months notice.

i once had a debt collection agency chasing me because my on file credit
card number with ebay expired - once they emailed me i put the new
number there but a few weeks later along came the agency - and getting
in touch with ebay to ask them to stop it was kind of hard.

or you could try complaining to one of the newspaper financial consumer
champions

when Sky will back down and apologise for the poor service that they proved
when the didn't answer your call in the first place

Of course, for every one person who complains this way there will be a
thousand like you who are given the "run around" when they want to cancel

the sooner that Sky are forced to offer automatic cancellation the better

I think all that stuff is deliberately contrived to be as daunting as
possible with the specific intention that people don't read it, as a
result of which they don't know their rights (or lack of them) and are
easily conned.

Much as I like your wisdom on technical matters this statement is in a
world - cobblers.

The *only* way a credit rating can be affected is if the matter is taken to
Small Claims Court (never going to happen for £27), & also won't happen as
Sky have sold the debt for about 10p in the £1 to the debt collectors -
Wescot(?) (who have no powers at all, they just send scary letters).

I digress, it needs to go to court (you can pay up beforehand if you get
court papers), you lose & then still don't pay after 28 days.

In this case it won't happen.

My dad suffered a stroke in late 2013 & I had to pick up his affairs. I
cancelled the Sky DD, got a letter from them, another from Wescot full of
bull**** (but would scare the uneducated into paying) then nothing.

He now gets about 1 invitation a week from Sky with tempting offers to
return.

I'm sorry that staement is also cobblers. I'm in no way advocating just not
paying stuff willy nilly, but no organisation can just add court costs,
give you a CCJ, send baliffs & so on without following the correct process.

In the case of Sky they just stop the service before a huge debt racks up &
then sell the debt to Wescot who play a numbers gamne with scary letters.

Please have a Google & find me an instance of someone getting a CCJ from
Sky. They don't do it, it's not worth the hassle. Even if they were to win
in court there's no guarantee of getting their money or costs back.

Well no, as I paid 1 month in advance then service was cancelled 1 month after I cancelled D/D.
