Sky TV on demand

I posted this to uk.tech.tv.sky but it looks a bit dead in there

Okay, I'm stupid and know nothing about wireless.

I got my TV on demand wireless connector yesterday.
I can plug it in etc, then it comes to the password thingee.
I'm supposed to enter it on the Sky remote control, but it would seem that
many people have had problems doing this as the passphase is letters.
My Virgin Media Superhub has a WPS PIN but no button to press. The
instruction book says, "If you have a WPS button on your router you don't
need a password, just press the WPS button on your wireless connector".
Is that really all I need to do? Or do I need to enter the WPS PIN into the
setup?

All help appreciated.

Steve

Google is a wonderful thing. The superhub WPS button is on
the edge panel where the lights are located, near the
bottom. Id is just a membrane button, not a hard switch, and
has WPS on it.

Not on my Superhub it isn't. I've had the Superhub for 18 months.

Thanks for the reply.

I've always been rather dubious about these magic WPS buttons. It seems that
after pressing it, any Tom, Dick or Harry has a couple of minutes to obtain
a permanent connection to your password protected Wi-Fi.

Yes, but how will they know you've pushed the button ?

Looks like I'll have to try putting the passphase in with the remote
control. This when the wife is not here. I don't want to look quite as
stupid as she thinks I am.

By watching you via that camera in the ceiling (the one that looks like
a dead spider).

Youtube is a wonderful thing too. I've just discovered why your advice
doesn't tally with my recollection of the Superhub. It seems they've
brought ot a new one - the Superhub 2.

It's the big button near the bottom right of the front panel with the
illuminated Virginmedia logo in blue. It has 2 functions.

Press for 2 seconds till the logo flashes once, then release and it
will flash red and blue while WPS is active.

Press for 6 seconds to switch wireless on or off. A lot of people do
this accidentally just while handling the unit and wonder why they
can't pick up a wireless signal. If the logo is not illuminated,
wireless is off.

Ahhhhhhhhhh. Thank you.

I had it flashing red and blue which is very annoying.
Pressed it for 6 seconds and waited, it eventually went off. The big button
is now blue and the green wireless light is still on. I have not turned the
wireless off have I?

WPS is fundamentally insecure anyway, regardless of whether you have
pressed the button.
