They say: 'Software update on Humax UK Freesat+ with Freetime boxes!!!

A software update will take place on all Freesat+ with Freetime boxes
today, the 7th January. This is an automatic update but if you can't
wait, you can do this manually simply search for new software by
pressing Home, Settings, System settings, Software update and Search new
software.
The update will provide support for the Freesat iOS App which will be
available in the App Store later this month.
For more information on what the update means to you visit,
www.freesat.co.uk/about-freesat/whats-new '

No mention of Freeview, which has been where the problem lies for me - I
was able to record from BBC4 HD OK on Freesat.

Why is it that vendors seem to think that we all have Facebook accounts
nowadays and that's pretty much the only vehicle that they use? I have
no interest in Facebook and generally steer clear of companies with such
a narrow viewpoint.

Because for them it is a very cheap service to use, and is (despite those who choose not to use it) very widely used by consumers.

Its rarely the case that they don't also put info on their own website for those who choose not to subscribe to services like facebook, but in the absence of facebook / twitter etc, what would you prefer them to use which is equally as good at disseminating information to a wide audience?

This thread started as a discussion of failures to record BBC3/4 HD on
Humax Freeview recorders, and mine failed on a BBC4 film. I was able to
record a programme from BBC4 on the 'Humax Freesat+ with Freetime' later
on (I also backed it up in SD on another machine to be on the safe
side). So I don't know whether there is actually an ongoing problem with
Freesat, but so far they haven't addressed (but have admitted to) the
Freeview one.

I do quote whatever is there on fb, realising that not everyone has or
wants an account.

I use a throwaway email address to join fb. No contacts in it, and
anyone I "friend" or who "friend"s me will have exposed theirs already.

The fb post today from Humax has been quoted above.

Humax do seem to reply more often and more quickly to fb comments.

Having just checked my Humax, it has no BBC4 HD channel, 106, tuned in.
Maybe I need a retune, but I don't worry about the HD channels, so it
won't worry me if it doesn't find it. Is this the referenced 'problem'?

I think you do need to rescan as it is a new multiplex rather than a
change within the existing multiplexes.

I'm a big fan of HD but I know opinions vary on the subject!

You have to do a rescan to get it (obviously it won't appear on the
older non-HD boxes). The problem is that although once scanned the
channel appears, timer recordings from it are liable to fail. This is a
bug which apparently Humax know about so hopefully a fix will be
forthcoming eventually.

BBC$ HD is only available on 1 or 2 transmitters at this stage so

Thanks - I'll give it a try tonight.

Both FTP and "copy to an external USB drive" can be done using the regular
firmware - the only gotcha is that if your USB drive is Win32 (Windows), you
are limited to files less than 4GB I believe. In case anyone needs to,
there is an "ext2" driver that will read most Unix formatted USB drives on
Windows machines and you should then format the USB drive on the Humax as
Linux format and copy larger files.

Unlike SD files, HD files are not decrypted when you copy them to an

requirement for the work round meaning you would need the custom

The software on the Humax automatically removes the encryption from an
SD file as you copy it off, meaning you are at liberty to play it on
another Humax box or by any other method you have available to you.

This is not so for HD files.

HDs remain encrypted when they are copied off the Humax and can
therefore not be played on any other device, including another Humax.
They can only be played on the Humax that recorded them.

The custom software allows you to set an option that causes all HD files
to be decrypted as soon as they are recorded or alternatively you can
decrypt individual files as and when required.

Unlike SD files, HD files are not decrypted when you copy them to
an external drive and thinking back, I wonder if that might have
been a requirement for the work round meaning you would need the
custom software.

As I have the software I didn't bother to remember whether it was
needed or not.

Have a read of the thread and see what it says.

I just copy SD files from my recent Humax to a thumbdrive, and then
I watch them on my PC. I don't see any encryption, unless Ubuntu is
a more sophisticated OS than I thought.

The software on the Humax automatically removes the encryption from
an SD file as you copy it off, meaning you are at liberty to play it
on another Humax box or by any other method you have available to you.

This is not so for HD files.

HDs remain encrypted when they are copied off the Humax and can
therefore not be played on any other device, including another Humax.
They can only be played on the Humax that recorded them.

The custom software allows you to set an option that causes all HD
files to be decrypted as soon as they are recorded or alternatively
you can decrypt individual files as and when required.

Ah, OK. I didn't know that SD files were encrypted in the first place.
Why bother, if they are decrypted when copied to an external device?

Note BBC4 does not start until 19:00, but earlier you should see a
page saying that.

Malcolm

And I should at least see the Ch. on the EPG.

Just rechecked the webpage, and today it's saying that there is no BBC4
HD for me yet. Oh well.

Yes, see my other message. That's not how I interpreted it the other
day, though. Oh well.

Don't forget that Mux 7 will be on UHF Ch 31 from Taccy, well outside
the legacy aerial group C/D (UHF 48-68) so if you don't have a Wideband
you may still not be able to receive, or receive terribly well.
