In a recent BBC TV programme consisting of snippets of Morecambe and
Wise shows, one joke from 1963 referred to a TV licence being £4

And a dog license was 7/6d. Those were the days......

and - in 1969 - I bought a quarterly season to central London for £25.
That's what a return ticket for one day costs today!

And they are now proposing to raise the London congestion charge
(initially £5, in 2003) from £10 to £11.50.

Equivalent to about 70 pounds now, which seems plausible considering
there was only one BBC TV channel then. The original colour licence
was 10 pounds in 1968, equivalent to about 150 now.

Of course, four quid was worth something in those days...
Its interesting to note that whereas things we need to have are now more
expensive when related to wages, but things we desire like consumer
electronics of the entertainment kind, are cheaper by comparison.

Somewhere I've still got an old radio licence as a souvenir, though I
can't remember what year. I think it was 10 shillings.
