People are using either their own bags or multiple-use bags sold by the retailers, or are carrying small numbers of items unbagged. Which is very unhygienic. I wonder what is the environmental cost of one attack of food poisoning. It isn't unhygienic because bags used for health or safety reasons are exempt from the levy. quote A single use carrier bag of any material and of any size is exempt from the charging requirement if it is used solely to contain one or more of the following unpackaged items: * food for human or animal consumption – for example loose fruit and vegetables and bread and other baked goods. * loose seeds, bulbs, corms or rhizomes; * axes, knives, and knife or razor blades; and * goods contaminated by soil – for example vegetables or pot plants. endquote from: http://www.doeni.gov.uk/guidance_on_...__ni__2013.pdf -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

Gosh Bill, This is almost as bad as me posting an OT about "DAB for Cars" - Ouch! UK Traveller Take no notice. Someone accused me of using the newsgroup as my personal playground recently. Why else would I be here but to play? There's no profit or sex to be gained. I think the best attitude to the newsgroup police and the demands of the greenys is to be totally irresponsible. Any amateur psychologists here? If so you should be asking, "Were you the type of child that used to be naughty in order to gain attention?" Curiously no. I was a greatly loved child who got all the attention a boy could possibly want. I only turned into a bad person when I discovered this newsgroup. Bill |

It's if they start to charge 5p for the ones that are no damned use for anything once you get them home that will annoy me To be fair the very thin ones do serve as emergency rubber johnnies. But if you fasten it on with an elastic band don't forget to take it off after. Bill |

Mine broke the lid off my brown food recycling container this week. That's the second one they've done it to. So, I completed the job and smashed the whole thing properly into lots of bits and chucked it in the non-recyclables bin. The food waste is going in there too from now on. They kick the plastic boxes hard and send then skating across the concrete towards the lorry. The boxes have cracked sides and abraded bottoms. Bill |

but some things are necessary use once bags are not tim That's a typical greeny 'we know best' argument. It's up to me to decide what I find necessary in my life, not you. Given the minuscule environmental impact of a plastic bag the individual should be allowed to decide for himself. There are so many things we do that have a far greater environmental impact than plastic bags, and plastic bags are so much more useful than many of those things. Bill |

Bill Oh for FFS! Do you *really* think that reusing carrier bags is responsible for food poisoning? Really scraping the barrel now. Tim Having spent some time recently (of necessity) learning about food hygiene, I'd say that the reuse of carrier bags if the contents are inadequately individually wrapped or bagged is a severe risk. Even if they are the daily re-use of the same bag carries risks unless the bag is thoroughly washed after every trip. Bill |
