New TV - Samsung or Panasonic?

What bugs me most about the Panasonic is its User
Interface.

The Samsung
Program Guide keeps the tuned channel visible and
audible in a quarter-screen, while the Panasonic one
stops tuning while in the Guide - you can't continue
to watch/listen while browsing.

Personally, as I always watch via the PVR, even when viewing
live, the details of the TV EPG become pretty academic.

As a person committed to saving the planet I implore you not to do that.
It wastes electricity.

But for the minimal extra cost, I can pause or replay at will,
can check recordings are progressing OK, don't have to wait for
the PVR to get its ducks in a row when I need it, and only have
to work with one menu system.

The fact of the matter is that I view so little live, that it
really isn't worth considering.

Well I hope you're happy when the sea rises fifty feet and floods your
house and the temperature rises so much that you can fry eggs on your
bird table and there's a plague of frogs.

So, it's picture quality, support etc that I'm interested in here -

Nothing about sound quality which says it all, really. No wonder the set
makers get away with not bothering.
++++++++++++++
The optical out is for my 7.1 surround system.

My 42in Panny Viera (around 5 years old) doesn't seem to output Dolby
from its optical out. Only 2 ch stereo. Can't figure out why.

It's a pain because it would be the lazy man's way of feeding 5.1 etc
from the Sky boxes and DVD player to the surround sound system.

Especially with Iran and N Korea spinning centrifuges to make WMDs.

That's all right, as long as the "weapons of mass destruction" are like the
ones the Boston marathon bomber is charged with setting off.

It did strike me that calling the Boston bombs WMDs devalued the term.
Apparently when dealing with civilians, the FBI class anything with more
than 1/4 ounce of explosive as a WMD, it's only when dealing with the
military that the normal CBRN type devices are called WMDs.
