No, they're on basic rates. Any specialist knowledge comes from their
own interests.

It'll be a shame if it goes. There's nobody else in the high street
doing exactly what they're doing.
What happened to Tandy?

I suspect their demise was, largely, due to sheer stupidity/arrogance
with regard to their currency conversion policy of USD to UKP pricing,
ignoring exchange rates by simply replacing the dollar sign with a
pound sign.

My treasured copy of "How To Program The Z80" by Rodnay Zaks, priced
at "TEN DOLLARS AND NINETY-FIVE CENTS" which they (Tandy) sold to me
for £9.95 just over thirty years ago is a permanent reminder of this
fact.

You don't suppose Maplin have retail outlets Stateside by any chance?

to be unduly bothered about getting the best price.

This was standard practice at the time, not just unique to them.

Quite possibly, they've cut down the 8pm opening here, which used to be
useful if you realised on day1 of a job you needed a few extra bits you
could make a distress purchase on the way home and have them ready for day2.

Couple of times recently I've ordered stuff overnight for collection
before 9am from an RS Trade counter, and they've been cheaper
