Which leads me to the obvious question - how the fornication do you know which F connector to order???? Yes a fair question, it is made a bit more difficult by the fact that there are two sorts of F connector, the kind that fits between the dielectric and the braid; and the kind which you fold back some braid over the outside of the cable and the connector screws over it. (These seem to be more popular these days, back when I was installing CATV in Canada the first type was all we saw.) (pauses to recall the joys of Labatt's Blue....) So you look up the dimensions of the cable you want to use, and find a connector (there's probably only a choice of two or three) the right size, there being only one dimension that counts for either kind of connector as the centre pin is always the inner conductor of the cable. Or buy a few of each size and pick the right one. Cheers Y. |

Or buy a few of each size and pick the right one. I have limited knowledge of this. There are "twist-on" and "compression" types. The twist-ons come in various sizes with the type of cable they are for in the name of the plug. Twist-on: http://www.maplin.co.uk/twist-on-f-plugs-10447 CT100 F Plug CT125 F Plug RG58 F Plug RG59 F Plug Compression: http://www.maplin.co.uk/f-type-compression-plug-388517 F Type Compression Plug Suitable for radial and compression fit tools Will accommodate RG6 Fast and easy fit Ideal for professional installers An F type connector suitable for compression fit tools allowing an easy and speedy installation of Television, cctv and other RF applications. I have no experience of the compression type. Are they a universal fit for all types of cable (CT100, CT125, RG58, RG59, RG6)? -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

The key piece of information: "CT100, RG6, 3/X/289 FU04E " This tells me (I hope correctly) that an RG6 plug is suitable for CT100 cable. This is, however, the first place I have seen the two linked. When my tuit is no longer square I might have a go at putting something in the Wiki. Cheers Dave R |

I worry that Maplin could be the next high street demise. The place is always swarming with assistants whenever I go there, which must cost quite a lot in wages considering the rarefied nature of most of what they're selling. A typical greengrocer or newsagent might have only one or two assistants and pretty much constant throughput at the till, but our Maplin branch often has half a dozen or more, with one of them only occasionally going to the till when somebody actually wants to buy something. It has the appearance of money going out faster than it's coming in. It'll be a shame if it goes. There's nobody else in the high street doing exactly what they're doing. Rod. |

No, they're on basic rates. Any specialist knowledge comes from their own interests. It'll be a shame if it goes. There's nobody else in the high street doing exactly what they're doing. What happened to Tandy? they sold their shops to Carphone Warehouse - Radio Shack still flourishes in the USA. Interestingly, in Guildford Maplin are in the shop that used to be Tandy. -- From KT24 Using a RISC OS computer running v5.18 |
