Decent distribution amp for loft
After a rearrangement of the living room which resulted in the telly moving
I've now got 2 x SAT & 1 x UHF leads extended from the old telly location trailing along the living room to the new location. As I'm now DIY retired I'm getting a tame Virgin Media installer to come & do all the rerouting, drilling & ladder work for me. This is an ideal opportunity to get some gubbins in the loft, as I plan to put a telly in another downstairs room & have a young 'un who'll no doubt want a telly in his room soon. Presently the 3 cables come from the dish & aerial straight to the living room. So, any recommendations for a decent distribution amp that will do the TV & SAT? I currently have a Quad LNB, but am not averse to changing it to a Quattro if required. Not overly fussed about cost, as long as it keeps going & outlives me. Cheers CD |

Cheers CD For satellite distribution a quattro really is your friend. I have such a system installed, based around a Triax LNB and Antiference switch. This handles sat/tv/fm/dab distribution to all rooms in the house. One of Bill W's colleagues, Keith (insert surname here) did the work for me ~5 years ago now, and touch wood, it's largely been trouble feee. HTH Clem |

Cheers CD Do you need satellite feeds in other rooms? If so how many feeds to each room and how many rooms? Bill |

Bill Yes, should have said, for future proofing I wouldn't mind a couple more dual sat feeds, say 4 in total including the main TV. I also didn't mention that the UHF aerial has a masthead amp, so will need some juice going to that too. CD |

You could use an octo LNB but my preference is a multiswitch. I also didn't mention that the UHF aerial has a masthead amp, so will need some juice going to that too. A multiswitch will carry UHF signals on all outputs, so you could use one and fit diplexed/triplexed wall plates, or if the m/switch has enough outputs run separate feeds from it for UHF and SAT (all feeds will be carrying both in reality). You can't run a Sky remote eye system via a m/switch so if you want to do that use an octo or m/switch for satellite and a separate UHF amp for UHF, and have separate feeds of course for SAT and UHF. I'd like as few cables/holes in wall as possible. Is this the sort of wall plate you mean? http://tinyurl.com/dycswde For 2 x Sat & 1 x UHF how many downleads would one of these need? I'm guessing 2? There's no sky remote malarkey going on, just distribution, any recommendations on a particular switch? Thanks CD |

Cheers CD Aerial & Quad LNB - 5x4 multiswitch (e.g. EMP Centauri, but there are loads around). Could add FM / DAB via dipole. 4 leads to triplex wall plates. Remove masthead amp and (if absolutely necessary) get a better aerial. |

There's no sky remote malarkey going on, just distribution, any recommendations on a particular switch? Not really. Check it has DC power on the terrestrial input. Avoid the very cheap ones. Vision, Hirschmann, Televes, etc, they're all OK. The type you want is known as five input, x outputs, where x is the number of feeds out, usually 12, 18, or 24. Make sure you get a mains powered one. Bill |

I used some of their big-ass satellite amps recently and they were pretty good, and I've been working on a newish flats system (installed by others) that used Triax switches and they seem fine. Didn't used to like their stuff at one time. Bill |
