A straw man argument ? Could be you've never left the hall of the mountain king and seen daylight.
This is becoming dreary. |

A foreign language is "babble" to anyone who doesn't understand it. Don't be so touchy. Who is being touchy. I asked the question -- Does your wife regard all spoken communication which is not in English to be "babbling"? You have just answered the question as it applies to you -- that you do indeed regard regard all spoken communication which is not in English to be "babbling" to Anglophone monoglots. Thank you for your answer, it reveals much and indicates that you must never watch VO movies in languages which you do not understand because of the babbling. Your response will be recorded and may be used for statistical purpoises. |

I don't think that politics comes into it. Obviously there will be the mad minority, but most parents will speak Welsh as their first language and probably live in a Welsh speaking community - this is how children are monoglot for their first few years -- Cheers Peter (Reply to address is a spam trap - please reply to the group) |

The dictionary would have answered this for you. Thank you for your answer, it reveals much and indicates that you must never watch VO movies in languages which you do not understand because of the babbling. Non sequitur alert! How can hearing foreign speech as babble reveal anything at all about anybody's viewing habits? For what it's worth, I only know one language well enough to speak it, but often watch foreign movies with subtitles. Even if there is an alternative English dubbed soundtrack on the DVD or an American remake which is in English anyway, I will *always* go for the original whenever possible. I've thoroughly enjoyed the recent spate of foreign cop dramas that BBC4 has given us, and look forward to enjoying more of them. Your response will be recorded and may be used for statistical purpoises. You can record mine as well if you like, for all the good it will do. Statistics that are unrelated to real life are just a load of babble. Rod. -- Virtual Access V6.3 free usenet/email software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtual-access/ |

I think you'll find "babble" is related to "Babel" as in the Biblical story of the "Tower of Babel", where God started all this different languages nonesense in the first place. The story goes that God wasn't too happy about this tower, so he put a spanner in the works by preventing people from being able to communicate with each other and they just kind of wandered off when speaking loudly and slowly in what had suddenly become their new language met with blank looks implying madness on the part of the speaker. Quite why anyone would wish to do this deliberately in the present day without the help of a devine being is a complete mystery to me. |

I think that is a coincidence that "babble" and "Babel" sound similar in English. The Oxford English Dictionary says of the verb "babble": Etymology: Apparently the syllable /ba/ which is characteristic of early infantile vocalization, this syllable being taken as typical of childish speech, and hence of indistinct or nonsensical talk + -le suffix 3. Compare prattle v. Compare also the name of Babel (see Babel n.), which, although etymologically unrelated, may have been associated with the verb in later use; (The symbol "" is used to mean "from".) The story goes that God wasn't too happy about this tower, so he put a spanner in the works by preventing people from being able to communicate with each other and they just kind of wandered off when speaking loudly and slowly in what had suddenly become their new language met with blank looks implying madness on the part of the speaker. How can hearing foreign speech as babble reveal anything at all about anybody's viewing habits? Because if you think the language is babble, you will not listen to 90 minutes of "babbling" will you? For what it's worth, I only know one language well enough to speak it, but often watch foreign movies with subtitles. Obviously because you do not consider foreign language speech to be babble. Statistics that are unrelated to real life are just a load of babble. Are you implying that the statement of Silk and your statement is not related to real life? |
