I thought the same of the shadowmask CRT when I first read about it. Rod. I remember my uncle coming into my bedroom late one night when I was eleven. He was the scary uncle, the one with a cravat and a cigarette holder, the one who lived with his mum, the one who my mother said gave her the creeps, but then my dad always said about his brother, "Innocent until proven guilty, let's not be hasty..." Uncle sat on my bed in the moonlight and said, "Nothing to worry about, nothing at all, but there's been an accident. Your mum and dad have had to go to hospital, but they'll be all right. It's just cuts and bruises." I asked, "Where's Grandma?" She'd been babysitting. "Oh, she's had to go home to look after Grandad. But don't worry, young man. I'm going to stay here with you until your mum and dad come home." I must have looked doubtful because he said, "Look, cheer up, there's only me and you in the house so we can do just as we like. I can show you a few of my magic tricks if you like!" I was suddenly concerned about my parents and sat up, and cried out, "Will Mum and Dad be all right?" I started to sob and Uncle put his arms around me.I felt his strong hands through my pyjamas, pulling me towards him. His breath was in my nostrils. He dried my tears with his very clean hankie, slowly and with infinite care. "You have a very pretty face, my boy, and when are a man it will be a handsome face. But for now we must just remove the tears..." Soon I was sitting up on the bed with him next to me, the silvery moonlight playing on his moustache. He pulled me towards him and held me tight, his left hand cupping my firm young buttock. He said, "Now, this is a time when you must be brave. You must be a man. There are many grown-up things you need to learn, and perhaps now is the time I should teach you a few of them. I have something to show you." He fiddled with his clothing, grunting with the effort, and eventually was able to extricate something. I sat bolt upright, for it was a copy of that month's Practical Wireless. "Ah ha! I thought that would interest you!" I turned my little bedside light on, and we flipped though the pages together, Uncle never slackening his grip on my buttock. He was obviously very worried that I might fall off the bed whist in his care. The magazine had an article about the shadowmask CRT. "Now look here young Bill," Uncle declaimed, "I want you to know that this is all stuff and nonsense. Such a thing cannot possibly be made to work. There is much nonsense in the world today, masquerading as science. Plate tectonics, colour television, flights to the moon! It's all nonsense my boy!" Eventually I was calmed and Uncle tucked me up in bed, having first suggested that I change my pyjama bottoms because the ones I had on didn't match the tops, and my mother might have been upset if she'd come home and found me in a state of sartorial disarray. Somehow the cord in my pyjamas had become knotted, so Uncle got down and pulled the knot apart with his teeth. His moustache tickled my bare young midriff. The effort made him snort a lot, and for a moment I was quite worried about him, because he rolled on the floor gasping for breath and groaning at one point. After he got up he suddenly said, very earnestly, "Look here young man, can you keep a secret?" "Of course I can!" I said indignantly. "OK." He paused, as if considering something important. Them having made a decision, he said, all in a rush, "Right, well, I know you're interested in all this radio and electronics stuff. Well me and my mates are going to a Radio Fair at Harrogate next week. You can come if you like, if your mam and dad say it's OK!" So we did, and it was great. Bill |
