It isn't just Russ Andrews himself though. I always thought Haymarket
Publications - the publishers of "What Hi-Fi" were a fairly reputable
outfit as far as magazine publishers go anyway.

On their website they reviewed a "high-end" USB lead mentioning how warm
the sound was when played to their external DAC, I commented asking how
the £50 cable could improve the digital signal in a way a 50p cable
couldn't ... the comment was deleted.

I would not want to buy a lead that made the DIGITAL signal sound
warm. It would have to be defective to do that.

Has anybody seen the Wotsat review itself? Was it a ****-take or the
award-giving review that the Russ Andrews website implies?

On the plus side, the bigger side in this case, the Powerlink
delivers greater spaciousness and detail to our reference
stereo set-up.

We wouldn't characterise our test Naim/Bryston/ATC system's
sound as particularly coarse ordinarily, but the Russ Andrews
smoothed any rough edges, opened up the sound agreeably and
liberated the finest points of Mogwai's May Nothing But
Happiness Come Through Your Door with casual efficiency.

Civilising unruly sound
The downside of this additional insight is an unwelcome
gentility. The song loses some urgency, lacking the drive
and attack evident without the Powerlink in place, replacing
it in part with a stateliness of which we can't wholly approve.

Come on Mark, don't say you've never come across Rip-Off Russ
before.

Sad thing is there are still people out there who will pay his
prices.

Doh!

I was talking to someone last week who was telling me how much better
his music sounded with his "quite expensive" mains cable.

My obvious amusement only elicited a fervent "no honest, it really does
make a lot of difference".

This same person insisted that I couldn't possibly be correct when I say
I can download from the net at 1.6MB, just not possible.

How's about £1,183 for what otherwise is an 80p kettle cable ?

http://www.russandrews.com/product.a...WGGSXPYLGKRJPJ

Reduced from £1,315 !!!!!! Buy now while stocks last.

But it does have "very low mains impedance"

I made my own 'designer' mains lead for a Cambridge Audio CD player, using a length of braided 'iron' flex from a small electric shop, a right-angle IEC connector from the local Maplin's, and an MK mains plug I had spare (one of the proper ones with 'wraparound' terminals and no loose bits, that you can't get in the shops any more). Looked expensive, cost less than £10!

If you look through on-line suppliers such as CPC, Rapid Electronics, Studiospares etc, you can get all the bits for designer leads quite cheap.
