My local council do an excellent job. They empty my bins. Are you sure about that? I thought the majority of councils contracted out the service to their friends in the garbage collection business -- after all, where thar's muck, thar's brass. |

My bins are empted by Stockport Waste & Recycling. The only part contracted out is bulky item collection. Steve -- Neural network software applications, help and support. As I'm sure you know the Yorkshire accent and dialect varies enormously, but you'd never hear 'thar's'. Probably the phrase would be something like 'where thiz muck thiz brass'. Certainly around here 'where' would be pronounced 'where', but in a lot of places it would be 'weer'. Our accent/dielect here is strongly influenced by the Notts accent, because of the influx of miners from that area a hundred years ago. Bill |

I confess I was probably making the almost unforgiveable faux pas and mixing it up with the Lancashire accent, which would of course be more appropriate for our Stockport correspondent. QUOTE As we say in Lancashire : "Everthing/one's weird these days, 'cept me an' thee and thar's a bit quair tha'sel'" . UNQUOTE Probably the phrase would be something like 'where thiz muck thiz brass'. Yes that does sound more appropriate for east of the Pennines. |

Same here on BBC 4 Freesat, all the way through the Brian Cox program on nuclear fusion, with signal at over 80 per cent. Is this a live broadcast situation, or just recordings, as has been reported before? No. Basically every program all the way through the entire evening yesterdaysuffered intermittently from glitching, meaning that the whole of yesterday's output was barely watchable. I'm particularly gutted, because I've been recording Dennis Potter's "The Singing Detective", and last night's episode was ruined. On the programme in question, occasionally it had all the symptoms of flaky reception, picture break up with loud pops on sound, although mostly it had the effect of jumpiness, as if frames had been dropped. Yes. As every program was affected, although I'm not really qualified to say, I would guess there was a problem at the playout suite, or whatever it's called. But, for chrissake, couldn't they, as back in the 'good old days', have interrupted the first programme affected, reputedly Top Of The Pops '77 at 1930hrs, apologise with a notice and "In the meantime here is some music", and FIXED it. Ok, so TOTP77 would have been a write-off, but at least the rest of the evening's output would have been saved. And, BTW, WTF is TOTP77 doing on BBC4 anyway? I wouldn't have wanted to watch it even back in '77, let alone now. Old Grey Whistle Test, yes, TOTP, only under compulsion, which I would have relieved by taking the p*ss out of it. -- ================================================== ======= Please always reply to ng as the email in this post's header does not exist.
