I gather it's tomorrow, but know no more than that. Just interested so
that...

i) I don't lose any recordings

If it's anything like the other regions so far, expect BBC 2 to vanish around
00:20hrs, it may go off the air, it may be suddenly replaced by ITV analogue
on the same frequency.

Within 20 mins or so, the existing BBC Mux will die, and the new high power
version appears about an hour later. You will need to rescan to see it,
because it will be where ITV analogue is currently (until 00:20hrs on Sept 7th).

ii) I have a Freeview HD setup I'd like to try out

No HD channels until stage two on Sept 21st.

Dunno - does anyone know exactly what's supposed to happen in the first
stage? [Sutton Coldfield]

I'm currently away from home but have shown SWMBO how to re-tune the
digital channels. But it would be nice to know what to expect when she
rings me with problems! What should she be able to get - and not get
(including analog) - tomorrow? Are any of the non-zapped analog channels
changing frequency, etc?

Will five disappear at a time completely different to the
other remaining analog signals?

I was sad enough to watch it!

BBC1 let Wogan finish, there was trailer for another programme, a voiceover
warning for viewers in the Midlands and Yorkshire, then white snow.

ITV1 took its place some time during the next hour but I was having a shower
at the time.

BBC digital reception is actually worse this morning where I live despite a
rescan. There's a squeaky sound emanating from the speakers every so often
which may be signal overload although the built-in meter (laughbaly
innacurate I know) shows no increase in signal strength (81%) since last
night.

Where do you live ? Is there a relay nearby ? It's possible your
receiver has locked on to the new BBC mux from a local relay (which
would have appeared for the first time overnight), or a more distant
high power transmitter, rather than the proper version from SC.

Check to see what's been stored at 800+ If during the scan it found the
'wrong' version of the mux first, it may well have put the SC version on
800 etc ?

Also check that the signal strength meter really is looking as Ch 43,
and not another mux instead.

The only relay in the area is a very low powered one at Allesely Park which
is 90 degrees off-beam, different aerial group and polarisation.

The 800s are all dupes of the minor BBC channels, ie: the _old_ Mux A.

My Pioneer box usually does a very good job of removing dupes but not this
time.

Also check that the signal strength meter really is looking as Ch 43,
and not another mux instead.

Yep, the meter is displaying the channel number as 43.

I might try an attenuator to see if that helps? It's a communal system so a
rigger will probably come out to adjust it eventually but I expect he has a
lot of other work on his hands right now! :o)

Thanks anyway.

That should read "the _old_ Mux B" of course.

We're curently getting some BBC channels from both the new high power
PSB1/BBCA on Ch43 _and_ from Mux B on Ch51.

Yes, you will, that's because the post DSO PSB1 contains the BBC channels that
are also in pre DSO Mux B.

I wouldn't mind so much but I'm now getting random picture breakup on _all_
PSB1 channels whereas I had perfect reception of all BBC channels before DSO
:o(

The duplicates in the 800s are still clear.

Could be, but the built-in signal meter is showing no increase in level over
what it was before.

Those meters typically read 100% at a level that is generous but far
from excessive, and continue to read 100% no matter how much stronger
the signal becomes.

Likewise, I came across a DTT box the other day which displyed the
signal strength immediately after every channel change. The signal
levels were 20dB more than they needed to be except for the ch29 mux
(this was Waltham and the aerial was Gp CD) which was inadequate. The
meter said '60' for ch29 and '65' for the others.

could it show higher? Shouldn't it be showing more? It might be that the
total sum of signals is overloading the tuner.

It was showing 91% with no increase on Ch43 compared to the other channels
since DSO started. It's _possible_ that 91% is as high as the meter will
read.

I then fitted a makeshift signal attenuator. Ch43 fell to 80% signal
strength with considerable improvement in picture quality but still with the
occasional glitch. The other channels now read as low as 25% signal strength
but with no noticeable loss of picture quality.

The 'quality' reading from the STB is 100% in all cases.

Our communal rigger is contractually obligated to supply a usable analogue
signal to all tenants on the estate up until the final switchover date so I
doubt he will make any adjustments to the system before then.

I still don't understand why it was necessary to lump all BBC channels onto
PSB1/BBC A when half of them are still available from Mux B on Ch51?

My Pioneer DBR-TF100GB appears to be doing the opposite, displaying only 91%
for a signal which is far in excess of that needed.

Because the BBC will only have one 'SD' mux after the second stage of
DSO.
