I have a Sony DVD/HDD recorder purchased in 2005 it doesn't have a manual
tune and I don't have a TARDIS to reverse the purchase decision. At the
time a manual tune function wasn't in the top 20 items on the check list.


I suspect this will become an essential feature as more and more
transmitters increase their power.


There are other possibilities, such as somehow automatically choosing the
strongest signal.

Frequency re-use is inherent to bandwidth economy.

If everyone is using more power it doesn't change how much the frequency can
be re-used.

Thinking back, my old Sony analogue TV did just exactly that.
