Funny how we've not heard about this on the "accurate and impartial" BBC, seems if one of Uncle Sam's reactors nearly melts down it's not a problem, Melts down? I've just done a bit of googling. It looks as though they had a fire in an electrical switchboard, and had to shut down some pumps for an hour. 'Time to boil' for the pond affected was estimated at 88.3 hours. So they had an 87.3 hour safety margin. And the no-fly zone was to stop the news helicopters from getting in the way. This was BTW largely garnered from US publicly available media. Andy |

Or do you expect all this for free? I pay for the service every time I buy a product from a manufacturer who sponsors or buys commercial air time on the station providing the news program. |

News releases from the utility that operates the power station, Omaha Public Power District, in reverse date order: http://www.oppd.com/AboutUs/NewsEven...#action_061611 Extracts in date order: Joint Information Center Activated, News Release No. 1 June 7, 2011 An Alert has been declared at Omaha Public Power District’s Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. An Alert is the second-lowest of four classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for nuclear power plants. Due to the declaration, the OPPD has activated the Joint Information Center in order to provide information to the media. The center is located on the atrium level of Energy Plaza, 444 South l6th Street Mall, in downtown Omaha. It will serve the news media as the only source for official, up-to-date, accurate information about the plant emergency and off-site implications, if any. Joint Information Center Activated, News Release No. 3 June 7, 2011 At approximately 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, OPPD officials declared they had taken all appropriate measures to safely return to the previously Level One Alert classification at Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Station to a Notification of Unusual Event (NOUE), which is the lowest of four classifications established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Earlier today, OPPD officials declared a Level Two Alert classification at the plant due to smoke in an electrical switchgear room in the plant. There was no indication of a fire and no releases of radioactivity occurred. After a thorough safety review, the plant was cleared to return its level one emergency that was declared Monday due to flood conditions. The plant has been shut down since April 9 for a refueling and maintenance outage. It remains shut down due to flooding of the Missouri River. The flooding appears to not have been a contributor to the electrical issue. The public and the media are invited to a debriefing press conference at 2:00 p.m., Energy Plaza Auditorium, 444 South 16th Street Mall, in downtown Omaha. -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

The Pakistan rag says "But, with an already documented 35% increase in the infant mortality rate for American mothers living in the western coastal regions of the US caused by radiation blowing onto them from Japan being ignored by these people there doesn’t seem to be much hope for them. (The EU Times)" Having spent some time on the West Coast of the US immediately after the Japan problems I don't recall anything about increased infant mortality, let alone a 35% increase. Hmmm...average in 2004 reported as 6.1 per 1,000. So 35% increase goes up to 8.2 per 1,000. However, can't find birth rate data for the moment but I would be interested to know how they have come up with such a figure so soon after the accident. Google reveals a few scare stories but they seem to be in Wordpress blogs and the like. I suspect a lot of scaremongering by interested parties. Google finds http://coto2.wordpress.com/2011/06/1...shima-fallout/ which gives loads of facts about various things, including Chernobyl and infant mortality, but give no evidence whatsoever that an increase in infant mortality in the US is due to the Japanese nuclear problems. All it seems to say is "we should investigate". This is not a report of any evidence of a direct link. I refer the honourable members to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correla...mply_causation Also, I didn't see any comparison with the same month in the previous year - just a comparison of one month against the previous year's average. The headline does not report a correlation - just puts a question mark. So mis-information rules. Cheers Dave R -- No plan survives contact with the enemy.
