How come BBC Radio Scotland is carried on a commercial DAB multiplex? It was decided a while ago that the most practical and pragmatic solution for carrying BBC 'local' stations on DAB was to reserve space on the relevant local DAB muxes, and making it a requirement of the commercial mux operators in each area to carry the corresponding 'local' BBC station(s) FOC. However, don't forget, ten years ago some BBC Radio and TV was carried on the SDN Mux, which AIUI the Beeb paid for ? So are we not looking at a commercial arrangement between the BBC and one of the commercial multiplex owners? I am sure Lord Sugar would expect his prospective apprentice to be capable of negotiating a deal! ....and, as usual, he'd be disappointed. -- Ian |

My intent was not to disparage all of the Promenade Concerts, just the excessive national chauvinism that has became part of the traditional last night activities. Personally I can't think of a better outlet for national chauvinism (if that's the best name for it) than in the form of something enjoyable and harmless that everybody can share. No doubt *some* of those participating may be doing so with jingoistic feelings. But for others it is really just a party to enjoy at the end of having been to so many great events. And in recent years it really has been more 'flags of all kinds'. Bear in mind that most prommers at the last night will probably have also been to many previous concerts. The people who only turn up for the last night tend to be the ones in the private and corporate boxes up the wall. That said, I'd agree with Peter that all the 'extras' which have been piled into the event do make a bit of a mess. I guess the BBC are now ultra-sensitive to the criticism of it being a SE 'little englander' event. But the fall for all the 'including Wales means harps and choirs singing flat', etc, stereotypes which have to be included. I'm more of a traditionalist - I'd want the G&S and Strauss nights re-established as annual events. This year, as in recent years, the BBC seem to be going overboard on 'Film Music' and quasi-jazz, but still neglect other areas like G&S. Are any of the performances going to be in 5.1 on BBC HD though? Pass. Personally I'm more concerned that all the furtling about to force Alba onto DVB-T may degrade the bitrates assigned to BBC4 in Scotland. And FWIW The BBC have also reported on their surround sound recording/broadcast of Proms. 128th AES Convention, London May 2010, paper 8039 "Upping the Auntie: A broadcaster's take on ambisonics". Examples include a 'Last Night'. So I assume they'll be doing something along those lines this year, can't say any more about it at present. Those who enjoy things like football or those awful "talent" shows, or even those who sing the same dreary dirges in church every Sunday, can have their repetitive excitement every week, so I feel perfectly entitled to have mine once a year, whatever anybody else thinks of it.
