Haven't you set your watch to the local time? You would have found that easier at night I guess. Then if it were clear you could try and see if the other shadows were visible on the arch. But IIRC it has also been claimed that the Moon helped remove some of the atmosphere and thus avoided the Earth having an atmosphere so dense as to become like Venus.
