Are the "non-changers" on Pay-As-You-Talk? I believe that Vodafone PAYT
doesn't automatically change, but contract does - or at least that's what
happens in our multi-phone house.

Mine is on a super-dooper gold plated major corporate account, contract.
SWMBO has a T-Mobile contract, that does auto change when returning to
the UK, and at GMT/BST changeovers. The GMT/BST change last weekend was
the first time my phone has automatically changed, so something in
Vodafone land has been reconfigured (perhaps !)

I had to change the time on my phone (pay monthly) on Sunday, but all this
has made me look more closely at the facilities on my handset. I find,
buried off screen when setting date & time, a selection marked "Auto-update
of time". This was switched off - it's now on. I'll discover in the autumn
whether it works.

ASDA Pay-As-You-Talk, which is essentially Vodafone, doesn't change either.
I've also used Vodafone and Orange, and my recollection is that neither of
these changed in the UK. My limited experience with mobile phones overseas
echoes those described by others here, which suggests that everybody else
except us implements this simple facility, but we don't care.

I am indeed on O2 pay as you go, samsung C3050. Away on the O2 forum
someone reported Nokia that changed and someone else another model of
Samsung. I will ask if they're monthly contract or PAYG...

Seems odd to make it happen for one type and not the other!

It probably won't. Mine's switched on and it doesn't.

Oddly, one facility that does work in the UK is to display the region in the
form of the STD dialing code. Why anyone thinks this is of more practical use
than to show the correct time is beyond me.

It's a legacy thing from the period when there were local call tariffs.
You could call a local number, (i.e within the same STD area the base
station was located in) for a discounted rate.

I think it's only Vodafone that support it. Someone commented to me once
it helps you guess the number of a local taxi firm, if you find yourself
in an unfamiliar area, just take the code and try 222222, 333333, etc
after it !

I've only ever seen the same feature used in The Netherlands.

In South Africa you get a weird 'utilisation' figure in percent, telling
you (AIUI) how busy the cell you're in is !

I recall borrowing somebody else's top of the range mobile once and noticed
that it showed the PostCode that you were in and the PostCode of the cells to
the North, East, South and West.

As I knew exactly where I was, this feature wasn't of any use to me but, in
those far off pre-satnav days (I think the 'phone was analogue!) I can see that
it could have been very useful ...

I hadn't bothered to change my T-Mobile PAYG phone,
but I see it's done it by itself.
