new aerial or second sKy dish?
Hi Folks can you please give me some advice...
Currently have one sky dish - sky+ on 2 outputs an old sky box on the third and a freesat box on the fourth. To get freeview I would have to replace te aerial/downlead currently it gaive a snowy picture with analog (and always has done) and not enough signal to use the digital tuner in the samsung. The kids are growing up slowly and swmbo wants a tv in the bedroom so thats 4 more aerial points/freeview/freesat boxes (over the next couple of years) We have a spare sky dish which I am happy to mount (access from flatroof on the side of the house) - cabling would be relatively easy from there as well. We had a quote from aerial installer to replace aerial on chimmney wth a '''digital''' one but with a single downlead this was about £250 I'm not sure whether I can install the aerial on the chimmney myself? So as I see it 2 options are 1) 4 freesat boxes + cabling or 2) 4 freeview boxes (probably got an old one around somewhere) + New aerial + cabling installed by 'proffessional' or 3) 4 freeview boxes (probably got an old one around somewhere) + New aerial + cabling install by me It seems that freeview boxes generally are cheaper than freesat ones What should I do? I think it depends on how easily you can install an aerial yourself, and how sure you can be that you will purchase the right aerial first time. That partly depends on your location, but may be easier after the analogue services are switched off and the power of the digital transmissions is increased . Another option is to use a Sat multi switch. You would probably also require a quatro LNB to your existing dish. -- Michael Chare |

Remember that so long as it has the requisite unobstructed
sky-view, a satellite-dish can be located at ground-level, unlike a UHF antenna! Round here, plenty of people bolt their Sky-dish to a fence, while a UHF terrestrial antenna needs to go on a chimney-mounted 10-foot mast or a couple of conjoined scaffold-poles at the highest point in the garden just to see over the surrounding woodland. THe "old skybox" and quite likely the new one should have a UHF out which can be used with their "magic eye" or whatever they called it in another room. Assuming you don't want to receive more than four channels at once this should work. Otherwise buy an octo LNB. TIA -- (º..¸(¨*..¸ ¸..*¨)¸..º) ..°.. Nik ..°.. (¸..º(¸..¨* *¨..¸)º..¸) |

There are a few channels that are FTA on Freeview, but subscription on satellite, Dave for example, so it might be worthwhile having both systems. I was wondering, if you stood on that flat roof and bolted a pair of T&K brackets to the wall and fitted an aerial on a pole long enough to clear the roof, do you think you would get sufficient signal? That's the way I rigged my aerial here, and there is no way on earth I would climb onto the main roof to access the chimney! -- Graham. %Profound_observation% |

Hi Thanks for that it would have to be a very long pole to mount it from the flat roof - SWMBO vetoed that :-( I think it comes down to whether I can diy the aerial on the chimmney - in terms of cost £40 rather than £200 the oct lnb looks good since I would have to buy bolts (guess £10) to mount the 2nd sky dish..... regards -- (º•.¸(¨*•.¸ ¸.•*¨)¸.•º) .•°•. Yes it is, comparing the Dreambox sat receiver via external SCART over the inbuilt Freeview tuner the SAT signal is noticeably better:)... -- Tony Sayer |

As you already have two aerials, you will need planning permission for a second dish. The multi-switch approach sounds like a good option to explore. It does mean changing the LNB. |
