TOT : Cons appoint BBC news editor as Comms chief
The prime minister has chosen a senior executive at BBC News to replace Andy
Coulson as Director of Government Communications. Craig Oliver, Controller of English at BBC Global News, and a former editor of the BBC News at Six and Ten will take up the post shortly. His job will be to lead efforts to sell David Cameron, the Coalition and the Conservative Party to the country. BBC director of global news, Peter Horrocks praised Mr Oliver but added: "Given the crucial editorial independence of the BBC, Craig and I have agreed that he should end his duties at the BBC immediately." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12348159 Privately, senior Tory backbenchers are incensed at the appointment. "We have spent years flooding newsgroups and forums with propaganda about a left-wing conspiracy at the BBC. Now it has become known that the key man at BBC news was in fact a Tory has blown our credibility apart." Mr. Bill Wright, leader of BABEL "BBC Are a Bunch E'Leftys" was unavailable for comment. Clever that one, because of the meaning of 'Bolshie'. Anyway, of interest to me is Peter Sissons' new autobiog, in which he talks of the left/liberal mindset at the BEEB, how he tried to oppose it, and the fact that fairly extremist environmentalism is regarded as the norm. Bill You mean Peter 'can't ask a question' Sissons. Probably the worst newscaster the BBC have employed. He couldn't cut it in the modern interactive newsroom and the BBC demoted him. He subsequently left in a huff. He was that bad that even Sky didn't want him. His only claim to fame is that he went to school with 3 of the Beatles! Don't mention the Queen Mother! He joins a long list of ex-BBC employees, Des Lynam, Michael Parkinson, Morecambe and Wise, Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, all of whom fell on their arses. Except in Sissons case, even ITV didn't want him. Sheila |

Is this man mad, or a masochist? Brian Oddly, it seems that the man was a Guardian reader, and is not all at committed to the Tory party. However I should think that the higher echelons on the BBC have plenty of Tories in their ranks. The problem with the BBC (regarding political bias) is that the creatives are predominantly on the left, especially in light entertainment, and for some reason no-one sees fit to impose balance. "Bill Wright" wrote in message ... Oddly, it seems that the man was a Guardian reader, Not odd at all, you have spent years convincing us that everyone at the BBC reads the Guardian. and is not all at committed to the Tory party. Why should he be? He should be chosen on his ability to do the job. However I should think that the higher echelons on the BBC have plenty of Tories in their ranks. Quite probably. The problem with the BBC (regarding political bias) is that the creatives are predominantly on the left, especially in light entertainment, If that be true, it is hardly a BBC problem. You would have to have a word with the 'Creator', (if you can get hold of her). and for some reason no-one sees fit to impose balance. So how do we do that? Send out press-gangs to swap 50% of Bank Managers with 50% of song and dance men? Sheila |

You think it more important to have a 'political balance' than being good at what they do? What you are suggesting is appointments based on political leanings. Aren't there already far too many of those? -- *Pentium wise, pen and paper foolish * Dave Plowman London SW To e-mail, change noise into sound. |
