I don't know how the cold cathode fluorescent tube or tubes are typically
arraigned behind a LCD panel

Along the edges.

I have a four year old Samsung 32" LCD telly which doesn't seem to be
wearing very well. It's sprouted some dark patches on the panel...

My first thought was to wonder if it could be a bacterial infection of
some sort. Have a close look with a good magnifying glass.

Sounds like an interesting idea. There's nothing I can see on the
surface, so it would have to be between the LCD and the backlight. I'd
first wondered if dust had got in there, maybe borne on convection
currents or something.

The effect depends heavily on the brightness of the image though. It
can't be seen on bright or dark images. It shows up best on mid levels.
The photo was taken on 50% grey. That suggests to me that it's a problem
with the response of the LCD panel itself rather than anything external
blocking the light.

Cheers,

Colin.
