I have a feeling that last time I investigated this the simplest recommendation was to leave it switched off for a few days. That's assuming it *is* "image retention". The blotchiness doesn't look like that to me. It doesn't bear any resemblance to anything the PC normally ends up showing. If anything was getting burned in, I'd expect it to look like a Club Penguin character. A Google, or whatever, search for "LCD image retention" or "LCD image persistence" will find lots of comments and articles on the subject. But the accompanying pictures tend not to look like the damage on my screen. They look like the images that burned them, not just vague smudges. Yes. I had a longer look at the picture you posted. It is difficult to imagine what image could have caused that effect. Having said that, The PC will have a screen-saver before the new telly arrives... Cheers, Colin. Has anything been pressing on the screen, eg over enthusiastic dusting/wiping. I've seen something similar on laptops at work that have been fitted with a privacy screen that put pressure on the LCD when closed. This could be somewhat eased with gentle massage with a dry cloth but not eradicated (but don't press too hard). Does it change with gentle pressure? Chris K |

We've been fairly careful with it, and no cleaning in this house could never be described as over enthusiastic ;o). It does get the odd prod from kids fingers though (in spite of severe beatings meted out to any offenders) so it could be a possibility. Does it change with gentle pressure? I've just tried squishing it about a bit. It doesn't seem to make any difference beyond the normal changes you get when the pressure is actually on the panel. Cheers, Colin. |

I don't know how the cold cathode fluorescent tube or tubes are typically arraigned behind a LCD panel, but could it be that one, or part of one is failing? I'd wondered about a backlighting problem too, though I'd thought it might be dust somehow getting in and settling between the backlight panel and the LCD panel. I'd sort-of counted it out though, because the blotches are only visible at certain brightness levels. Cheers, Colin. |

Had a customer with a Samsung LCD TV with the same problem. After much complaining Samsung, via the retailer replaced the TV. Sounds interesting, though I've long since thrown out any paperwork that came with the telly and I can't even remember the name of the web retailer it came from. I think I'll offer the telly to my dad, who's currently squinting at a 19" 4:3 set. The replacement is on order... Cheers, Colin. |

Why throw it away when you've still got the item to which it refers? It's just a stupid thing to do, but then most people seem to be stupid or pig-headed about such matters. |

We have a Poloride TV in the works canteen and that is doing the same type of blotching. Been in use for about 2 years. |

Here's mine http://rabstaff.99k.org/lcd1.jpg Ouch! That does look bad. It's interesting that it's showing the same horizontal banding as mine. It suggests that my theory about sunlight through the venetian blind is probably wrong. Same conditions except immediately prior to taking picture the set had been displaying a 4:3 pillar-box programme for half an hour. http://rabstaff.99k.org/lcd2.jpg That looks much more like "classic" LCD image retention. I notice that on mine too sometimes, but it always fades away over a few minutes. Cheers, Colin. |

I never understand why people do this. I only have the content of your last post to go on, but you seem to be the kind of person that will never understand very many things about very many people. Have you considered giving up trying? Why throw it away when you've still got the item to which it refers? Oh my god! The paperwork retention police are coming to get me! How could I have done something so stupid? I shall have to consider suicide. It's the only way I can get myself out of this *terrible* mess I've got myself into. It's just a stupid thing to do, but then most people seem to be stupid or pig-headed about such matters. Your post was a *properly* stupid thing to do. The attitude and tone make you come across as a complete bellend I'm afraid. Cheers, Colin. |
