A TV for incompetents
I have two well educated but technically incompetent and aged friends
who need a new Telly. When I lived in Edinburgh I set up their TV, VCR and Hi Fi for them. The VCR either does not work or they have forgotten how to operate it. The TV picture is now evidently quite faint. They don't like people coming to the house and they won't go for the hassle of a new aerial on their bungalow roof. How effective would a set top aerial be for them. They live high up near Cornerstone hill. As Edinburgh does not go completely digital until 2012 a dual tuner set would be needed for them. Any recommended |

Any recommended Sorry also being incompetent that sent too soon:-) Any recommended sets? They have lots of Free DVD's collected from newspapers that they could play if the set had a built in DVD player. Another problem would be if the TV stand needed assembling.Anything new such as the last phone they bought gets put back in the box as they do not understand the instructions. Derek |

He does seem to have set himself a hard task. I have a neighbour who does not have an outside aerial, does not want people to know he has a TV set. I do not know if he as gone digital yet or not. Took me years to convince my elderly neighbour she needed to get an outside aerial, people pay hundreds for a TV set but will not pay a penny for an aerial. Regards David |

Doesn't help if they literally won't let people past the threshold . . . Rob |

They basically watch BBC and as they only buy a paper twice a week never know whats on:-) Derek |

How do thy get on if they have a burst pipe of anything electrical needing attending too?, do they just put up with it or then let someone in?... In practice I'd go to John Lewis and get a Sony Bravia and the Blu ray player thats bundled with it, also does DVD's, and they might just might have enough signal of the existing aerial. But if they need a new one why wouldn't they let anyone do it?. If the roof leaked surely they'd let someone up there to change a tile or whatever?..... -- Tony Sayer |

They have several times been ripped off by gardeners, tree fellers, builders and other callers. At the moment they seem plagued by companies wanting to buy their big garden to build on or buy their house for its 3/4 acre site. I got them a reliable guy to do their garden but they made excuses and did not phone him. They obviously are not on the internet and cannot order goods by phone as he cut up their credit cards in fear of them being cloned. Derek |

Any recommended I presume from your description that they have an ancient analogue setup (VCR and CRT television? with dim pictures) so unless someone with a digital TV or STB can physically gain access to test it, then it's all going to be total guess work, I'd suggest simply leaving it until DSO, when if they want to continue watching telly then they will be forced into having to make some kind of move. Also there are organisations around to help elderly people during the DSO period, in fact my mother in law had a company call who fitted an STB free of charge and I'm pretty certain that if required they would have done the aerial as well. |
