TOT Pat Condell's latest blast of common sense
I am trying to get to grips with my new computer and Live Mail, so cheekily I have sent this link to see if it works. I hope the linked video will ring some bells with the clear thinkers who are regular contributors here. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=...l#grid/uploads Richard H |

As an atheist with disdain for religious extremism myself, I can understand the attraction of Pat Condell's rants, but he does put considerable strain on the truth. His attack on the supposed "Ground Zero Mosque" was particularly invidious, containing several outright lies. It was viewed be nearly 6 million people, and is suspected by some to be the main impetus for the Ground Zero anti-muslim protests in the US. I won't link to that, but I will link to Charlie Brooker's explanation of the reality: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...nd-zero-mosque |

For some robust and skilful demolition of religion I would recommend the recent debate between the atheist polemicist Christopher hitchens, and newly recruited Catholic Tony Blair. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...ebate-religion http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...+vs+blair&aq=f |

But hyperbole usually /is/ lying. And I found his comment about bestiality, at best, misleading and irrelevent. -- (\__/) M. Generally I find Pat Condell relevant and amusing and see little evidence of lying, some slight hyperbole maybe. Given that the Ground Zero Mosque thing was a complete phantom, as the Guardian article that I referred to shows, it's arguable that Condell's whole talk on it was one big lie. I've no intention of listening to it again, but at the time, when I heard his assertion that the Imam behind the "9/11 Mosque" was a supporter of terrorism and said that 9/11 was the fault of America, I checked up on Feisal Abdul Rauf and found Condell's assertions to be a calumny and outright lies. Although I had found Condell to be entertaining, at that point my opinion of him dropped through the floor. He is not a reasonable person. For some robust and skilful demolition of religion I would recommend the recent debate between the atheist polemicist Christopher hitchens, and newly recruited Catholic Tony Blair. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010...ebate-religion http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...+vs+blair&aq=f Yes, I'd seen that. I do find Hitchens, and even Dawkins to be a touch strident and probably edging into counterproductivity. My favourite advocacy of atheism was Jonathan Miller's series "A Brief History of Disbelief" that was shown on BBC Four -- that, in my opinion was the way it should be done, but that series gets little attention, presumably because Miller wasn't particularly rude about it. Ho hum. |

He's very one sided. It's a Guardian article, not a video. It's spot-on as far as I can tell. I'd only seen Brooker's TV series "Screenwipe" and "Newswipe", and had judged him from those. I hadn't noticed a strong bias in *his* commentary in those programs, although Newswipe did contain a section in which some crap poet read some left-biased BS. I understand that Brooker has radio shows as well, so maybe it's those you're judging him from. |
