Good Grief, I wanna shoot somebody (NOT OT)

Ok, so what I purchased the Direct TV sat system, I told them I wanted it
for HDTV later on.

Then we moved...Direct TV came out and put a new 3 head Sat dish on my roof.
I took the old receivers with me. The installed hooked everything up (but I
did not have an HDTV yet)
I went out and bought an HDTV (integrated) (Hitachi 57S700)

I added the HD package for an extra 10.99 per month.

You kind folks here have been helping to get it set up.....but guess what.
My sat receiver is an RCA DRD435RH.....that's not HDTV

The installer also left something that looks like a multiswitch (like I know
what one of those are)
and said "you will need this when you get your HDTV"..but did not explain
why.

Now....will the thing he left me let me receive HDTV without going and
buying another SAT receiver...
or does my TV have a receiver..(is that what the "integrated" means?)

Do I go out of the wall and into the TV, skipping the Sat receiver?? why did
I pay extra for "integrated" on my TV?
what does that really mean??

I hate being so stupid about this!!! and I'm going broke fast!!!
Please help!
Thanks,
jojo

jojo June 2nd 04 06:49 PM

ok...having some lunch...calming down.
So.
how about this.....
from SAT to multiswitch.
from multiswitch to Sat receiver, to VCR, to TV (ant a) (from VCR with audio
to audio receiver)
from multiswitch to DTV (ant c on TV) audio out from TV to audio receiver

Is THAT how this should work?? Is that how I get HDTV?
or am I still going to have to buy a new HDTV Sat receiver?
Thanks again...jojo

First of all, running the sat cable directly to your HDTV won't work---you
will have to buy DirecTv's HD box to receive their HD programming. I think
they are selling them for $299 at the moment---call or check their website.

Second, your set has an integrated ATSC digital tuner---giving the set the
capability of receiving OTA (over the air) digital signals without the
necessity of having a seperate box to tune and decode the digital broadcast
signals. The bad news is that you paid extra for it, and most of the
satellite and cable boxes provided by programmers have one built into them
anyway---but, on the other hand, if you ever decided that you wanted just
the OTA stuff, you're set to go. More bad news----if the satellite provider
that you use does not broadcast your local channels over the satellite, you
will also have to invest in a OTA antenna to pick up the broadcast
signals---

Hope you lunch was good :-)

Had an afterthought----

Have you considered dumping DirecTv for VOOM? They have a no upfront cost
deal going right now and will come out and install a dish, VOOM receiver,
AND the OTA antenna for free---with no contract or obligation to try. It'll
save you the cost of the DirecTv HD receiver and get you an OTA
installed----and their monthly service charge is about inline with DirecTv.
See VOOM's website www.voom.com

I'll stick with you until you get it set up right---I know how confusing it
is since I just went through all that you're going through----:-)

Have no fear JOJO. If you are a customer in good standing, you may be in
luck.

I've been with DirecTV now for 2.5 years straight and I just got a deal
for a HDTV receiver for $100 with a free install. You must call and ask
for the "customer retention" department. Since you have the phase three
dish, the install is simply installig the receiver.

My install had it's own problems which I am rectifying myself. Go to the
"DirecTV or Cablevision, Decisions, decisions, decisions" thread in the
cable/sat forum at http://www.hdtvforum.com. The installers who came to
myhouse where VERY green...nothing new I suppose. I wonder how many
customer are lost because of inexperinced installers.

Anyway, what multiswitch did the installer give you??? You might be able
to sell it. If you have the phase 3 dish, you already have four
independent lines and may not want or need the multiswitch. 5 X 8
switchs go as low as $49.99 retail. You can probably make some quick
pocket change for yours depending on what it is.

Why has no one told me this?
Not the guy that sold me the system (he knew we would be going HDTV)
not the guy that installed it at the first house (he knew too)
not the guy that installed it at the second house (yep, him too)
whine whine whine

ok...now I need an hd receiver.
great.
I am currently receiving local channels with my SAT broadcast, so that's not
a problem.
Thanks, guess I have to go spend some more money before I can continue.

Remember, we can still help you get set up with your present receiver until
your new HD box gets to you. You can still view the programming available
on the SD (standard definition) box, it just won't be in HD---

Keep this in mind----the signal coming directly into your house through the
satellite coax is just a raw data stream----it must be first be decoded
before you can view it. So you can't connect it directly to anything before
the data stream is decoded and made viewable. (I noticed you were
considering going directly from the multiswitch to your other components).
Connect it firstly to the DirecTv box satellite coax input, then use the
outputs on the back of the box to go to VCR, HDTV, audio receiver (if you
have one), and other components. If you want to be able to record, connect
from the DirecTv box coax output to your VCR coax input, then from the VCR
coax output to the TV's coax input. You will probably have a composite (but
no component) output on the DirecTv box that you can also connect to a
composite input on the TV. That way you can directly view programming on
the Sat box, bypassing the VCR or view through the VCR. To receive audio
this way, you will have to connect a right and left (red and white) RCA
connection from the audio outputs of the DirecTV box to the audio inputs on
the TV. Do you have an audio receiver? If so, I can help you connect
through the audio receiver's inputs. That way, you will be able to get
Dolby Digital sound output---

Confused yet? Hang in there, be patient----

Thanks! I think I'm good to go there.
I have my audio receiver, DVD, CD, VCR, Cassette tape recorder, Sat receiver
all hooked up.
My TV get regular signal (I'm assuming its digital, since its direct TV)
I can play DVD's (nemo, my son's favorite, look fab on the new TV)
I can play and record vcr tapes. My Audio receiver (Dolby) runs the whole
show for surround sound for peripheral components and TV when broadcast.
Just no dang HDTV.. I thought the entire time It was a bad setup on my part.
And for an interesting take, a salesman at Radio Shack (I stopped in to get
phone cable)
told me specifically that I COULD and SHOULD run HDTV through the VCR first.
That one piece of information is what lead me down the road (see previous
post)
of unreality.
I have "met" quite a few helpful and friendly people here though!
I know many of you have got to be rolling your eyes at the way we have gone
about this...
There IS a reasonable explanation, and I'll give it to anyone who gets bored
enough
to want to hear it. ;-)

for the "customer retention" department. Since you have the phase

three
dish, the install is simply installig the receiver.

My install had it's own problems which I am rectifying myself. Go to

the
"DirecTV or Cablevision, Decisions, decisions, decisions" thread in

the
cable/sat forum at http://www.hdtvforum.com. The installers who

came
to
myhouse where VERY green...nothing new I suppose. I wonder how many
customer are lost because of inexperinced installers.

Anyway, what multiswitch did the installer give you??? You might be

able
to sell it. If you have the phase 3 dish, you already have four
independent lines and may not want or need the multiswitch. 5 X 8
switchs go as low as $49.99 retail. You can probably make some quick
pocket change for yours depending on what it is.

You don't need an installer to hook up the box. Just hook it up and you
should be ready to go. You already have a HD ready dish installed.

You do know there are no HD local stations with DirectTV, right? If you
want HD locals, then you need to install an external antenna and hook it
up to the HD box from DirecTV. The box will integrate your locals into
the guide data.

The only HD programming you are going to get are things like HBO-HD
/SHO-HD (if you subscribe), ESPN-HD, Discovery-HD, HDNet, HDNet Movies,
and HD PPV (or SPICE-HD if you're so inclined).

You may be eligible for CBS-HD feed if you qualify and are in an
owned-and-operated CBS market. I hear FOX-HD is coming this Fall.

Or you could return the DirecTV box, unsubscribe from HD service, and
hook up an external antenna directly to your TV for free for all local
HD channels in your area which you are going to need to do anyway if you
are interested in HD local programming.

It's against the law to restrict OTA antennas. Just cause it's in the
neighborhood bylaws don't make it legal. FCC says they must allow OTA
antennas and sat dishes up to (I think) 3 meters.

There are lots of folks that think that just because it says "HDTV" on the

It's who is covering who's ass for compliance and, you guessed it, who is

Beware of going into Radio Shack and expecting to find anyone

the salesman had no idea what I was talking about. He kept trying

David, thanks!!

I tried this...it says I need a small multi-directional (yellow) to pick up
the 4 major networks.
it also says they all 4 broadcast in HD.
This is tweaking my interest!
It says something about possibly and antenna attached to a satellite
dish...can anyone educate me on this?
maybe I can keep my sat subscription that includes local channels (in
digital only)
and drop the local channels part for this...any thoughts?

Can you point me in the direction of these antennas (a recommendation for a
