Remember, we can still help you get set up with your present receiver

until
your new HD box gets to you. You can still view the programming available
on the SD (standard definition) box, it just won't be in HD---

The HD channels are not available on a regular receiver.

Have no fear JOJO. If you are a customer in good standing, you
may be in luck.

I've been with DirecTV now for 2.5 years straight and I just
got a deal for a HDTV receiver for $100 with a free install.
You must call and ask for the "customer retention"
department. Since you have the phase three dish, the install
is simply installig the receiver.

My install had it's own problems which I am rectifying myself.
Go to the "DirecTV or Cablevision, Decisions, decisions,
decisions" thread in the cable/sat forum at
http://www.hdtvforum.com. The installers who came to myhouse
where VERY green...nothing new I suppose. I wonder how many
customer are lost because of inexperinced installers.

Anyway, what multiswitch did the installer give you??? You
might be able to sell it. If you have the phase 3 dish, you
already have four independent lines and may not want or need
the multiswitch. 5 X 8 switchs go as low as $49.99 retail.
You can probably make some quick pocket change for yours
depending on what it is.

You don't need an installer to hook up the box. Just hook it up and
you should be ready to go. You already have a HD ready dish
installed.

You do know there are no HD local stations with DirectTV, right? If
you want HD locals, then you need to install an external antenna
and hook it up to the HD box from DirecTV. The box will integrate
your locals into the guide data.

The only HD programming you are going to get are things like HBO-HD
/SHO-HD (if you subscribe), ESPN-HD, Discovery-HD, HDNet, HDNet
Movies, and HD PPV (or SPICE-HD if you're so inclined).

You may be eligible for CBS-HD feed if you qualify and are in an
owned-and-operated CBS market. I hear FOX-HD is coming this Fall.

Or you could return the DirecTV box, unsubscribe from HD service,
and hook up an external antenna directly to your TV for free for
all local HD channels in your area which you are going to need to
do anyway if you are interested in HD local programming.

TV antennas cannot be legally restricted due to subdivision or neighborhood
covenants----this was legislation passed by Congress----

No explanation necessary, Jojo---

There are lots of folks that think that just because it says "HDTV" on the
set, that it's just plug and play and let's get high def TV. But, since
you've learned, that's not exactly the case. The technology and the
specifications are just too new for an easy worldwide standard.

It's who is covering who's ass for compliance and, you guessed it, who is
going to profit from what in the upcoming new world of HDTV----

Beware of going into Radio Shack and expecting to find anyone
with a clue. I went in today to get a new outdoor TV antenna and
the salesman had no idea what I was talking about. He kept trying
to show me rabbit ears. He finally got the manager to help me
get the antenna I wanted. The original salesman looked to be at least
30 years old and he was still this totally clueless.

They explained that...but I'm just now learning what that means....
so local channels ARE broadcast in HD, I just won't get them without
an antenna?
so, how much are one of those?
(and thanks for trying to educate me..I'm learning a lot fast, most
learning that I don't know what I'm doing! ;-)

They vary in price. You should first see what locals if any are
broadcast in your area in HD. Go to www.antennaweb.org for information
on the type of antenna you need and the channels available in your area
and the distance between you and transmission source.

David, thanks!!

I tried this...it says I need a small multi-directional (yellow) to pick up
the 4 major networks.
it also says they all 4 broadcast in HD.
This is tweaking my interest!
It says something about possibly and antenna attached to a satellite
dish...can anyone educate me on this?
maybe I can keep my sat subscription that includes local channels (in
digital only)
and drop the local channels part for this...any thoughts?

Can you point me in the direction of these antennas (a recommendation for a
good buy)
Thanks,
jojo

Start a new thread describing what type of antenna you need and what
your mounting options (internal or external and size) and see what
responses you get.
