No subtitles on ITV HD
 

Just watching the Australian Balloon Adventure on ITV HD. Turned on
subtitles (inconvenient phone call!) but was surprised to find there are no
subtitles. They are available on ITV SD and Freeview, so why not on HD?

Could that be a problem with the technology?

I.e processing the picture takes longer than processing the subtitles so
despite being broadcast in sync they are displayed out of sync?

I've noticed the same thing with the HD channels in the Netherlands. One HD
channel does have subtitles but in a very tiny font positioned half way up the
screen.
which sounds like a feed of the SD subs positioned as SD...

I checked with ITV Viewer Services about this and they replied by return:

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding carriage of access services on the
ITV1 High Definition channel.

ITV1 HD is a new service which began broadcasting as a separate channel
on a dedicated channel location earlier in 2010.

The initial focus for our engineering team is to ensure that the HD
channel is up and running and working correctly and efficiently. The
team will then be in a position to look at the provision of access
services for ITV1 HD, such as subtitles and audio description (AD) and
configure the operational standards for the platforms on which the
channel operates.

It is unlikely that ITV1 HD will carry AD or subtitles until much later
in the year. The ITV1 HD channel (unlike the former red button only
service) is recognised as a new channel by our regulator Ofcom and there
is no regulation to provide access services in the first year of
broadcast of a new channel. However, access services are a priority for
ITV and we are working hard on the technical infrastructure across
multiple platforms to facilitate them as soon as possible.

Please be assured that we do appreciate the importance of access
services to many of our viewers and would like to assure you that
provision of subtitles, audio description and signing will continue as
normal on the main ITV1 service in the meantime.

We do hope the above information helps to clarify the situation."

Nosubtitles on CH4 HD either. Poverty station Five HD has managed
subtitles, why not ITV1 and CH4?

Funny, when I checked out C4 HD on Freeview this morning (after reading the
OP) I found that the subtitles were working fine, although none on ITV1 HD,
or for that matter BBC HD, presumably because they were showing promos.
