We have our beady eyes on a Sony Bravia KDL40EX401U selling for £480. But
have now seen a Sony Bravia KDL40V581OU for an extra £100, and it says it
has a Bravia 3 engine; whatever that means.

If we pay out another £100 on top, are we really getting anything extra that
is worth that money? Thanks for any advice.

I don't know the difference, but I have seen a 42 inch Bravia 3 HD and
it really does stand out compared with the other LCD TV's that were on
display. There are probably more features at a guess. I think I would
pay the extra.

The version we bought had an Integrated Freeview HD tuner, and such
features as wireless internet capability (requires a dongle).

Sony's Website has an excellent comparison tool.

The major difference appears to be the satellite
tuner. Although you can get separate tuner boxes for
£50 or less, an HD one will generally cost more than
£100. If you already have Sky HD, then you may not
want this. Neither model supports Freeview HD.

I have no experience of the Bravia 3, but would expect
the more advanced picture processing to give a better
picture for SD.

Indeed.
If you don't have a HD broadcasting source and are happy to chuck a cheap
dish up (or have one already) then I'd say it's worth paying for.
