Sony Bravia KDL32W5500U 32" LCD TV: Upscaling

(Pursuit of truth. Trying to decide whether or not to splash out on an HD STB - e.g. Humax Foxsat.) I've seen comments that the benefit of HD only emerges with TV's larger than 32". I have a 32" 720p set (Panasonic) with integral Freeview tuner. I also have a Humax Foxsat HD STB connected to it. To my eyes at a viewing distance of approx 8 feet, the BBC and ITV HD broadcasts are definitely much sharper and more detailed than in SD Freeview. -- John Aldred |

Presumably also the output from its builtin Freeview SD tuner? Correct Upscaling *not* applied to HDMI input (e.g. from STB or blu-ray)? Not if that HDMI input is running at 1080 x 1920, but it will at 720 x 1280. Also the TV must be set to 1:1 pixel match, its factory default is slight overscan. So the question is: When the Sony 32" receives a Freeview SD signal, would the upscaling it does on that signal produce a picture noticeably superior to an un-upscaled Freeview SD signal? (Same question w.r.t. input from a pre-blu-ray DVD player.) If a Freesat/Freeview HD STB is connected to the Bravia, and the box can also do upscaling of Freeview/Freesat SD signals, should either the TV's upscaling or the STB's upscaling be turned off? (Same question w.r.t. to connection of a blu-ray DVD player.) WE have Sony Bravia KDL32W5500U 32" LCD TV and a Sony Ble Ray player. Our cable company makes signals available in analogue SD and HD. The HD image is noticeably better than the SD image and the SD image is subatantially better than the analaogue image. An upscaled DVD image ia better than the same DVD played with anold Phillips DVD palyer and a 1987 Sony CRT TV. Whether you can perceive the difference bewteen SD and HD depends on the distance between the viewer and the TV. We sit 2-3 metres from the TV. |

So what I wonder is the problem with different ways of making the picture fit the space. Presumably if the processing was fast enough some kind of tweening of edges that otherwise would be jaged could be done, and presumably, some sort of way to make movement look more smooth would also result. You can download the manual for this TV.There is an explanation of how the TV handles an image to make it fit the screen. |

True; but I think the OP was, in part, asking if he would see any benefit from HD on a 32" screen. However, in my opinion, it is the poor quality of the SD broadcasts that make HD look good, even at a relatively small screen size. -- John Aldred |

You can download the manual for this TV I have done that, but am puzzled that - although my Bravia KDL32W5500U (notice the 'U' on the end) provides Freeview - the downloadable manuals all refer to 'Freesat'. In fact I could find no entry for that model (with the 'U' at the end) in the dropdown list at the Sony site. Anyone know if the manuals are the correct ones - apart from the Freeview/Freesat mismatch? -- /\/\aurice (Replace "nomail.afraid" by "bcs" to reply by email) |
