I used to set up the video tape recorder with PDC on (for certain channels)
so that it would start/stop when the programme was transmitted (to allow for
early and late starts). I have now gone over to digital (Virgin Media V+
box) and have been told that PDC is not available. It would seem that the
box is capable of recording only at times set. Even starting 5 minutes
early and ending 3 minutes late still results in a clipped recordings.

Would starting even earlier / ending even later resolve this problem? Does
it always start/stop at the stated times or does it detect and start/stop
within that time period with the transmission of the programme? If the
latter it would seem that starting/stopping 10 minutes either side the
programme time would resolve the problem (except, of course, where there is
a conflict with two other programmes in which case it may fail).

Thanks.

There is no accurate recording feature on the V+ box to my knowledge,
despite it being available on Freeview+ boxes.

I would have thought that cable would provide the ideal medium for
accurate recording - maybe it'll come with a software update or we
will have to wait until the Virgin/Tivo box comes along and replaces V
+.

Of course, in the *Good Old Days*, programmes used to start and finish
punctually!

sigh

Because Leonard Sachs (born Roodepoort, Transvaal) was highly skilled
at keeping the show paced at the right tempo.

I am surprised that it isn't on Virgin STBs as Sky ones can all do it!
Or rather they can if the broadcaster dynamically updates the EPG. The
BBC and Sky do this well - others are less good.

I don't see how Tivo makes ANY difference to this. It will still rely on
the broadcasters updating the EPG in real-time!

The V+ box should have a manual recording function.

Press V+, then Set New Recordings, then select Manual Recording

Thanks. Manual recording certainly is a solution if I am here to do that.
unfortunately it doesn't resolve the problem of getting the V+ Box to
reliably record a complete problem whilst not here.
