Sony Bravia Default
Hi all
Can anyone explain the workings of a Sony Bravia TV please? I have a Sky box on AV1 and DVD player on AV2. If the DVD player is left powered up then the TV shows the DVD splash screen at start up. If the DVD is powered down and the Sky box left powered up, I would expect the TV to display Sky at start up - but no, it defaults to its internal TV/Freeview. How do I get the TV to default to AV1 when first turned on? Or do I have to swap the Sky and DVD player - does the TV default to AV2 only? TIA Phil |

TIA Phil Mine is set up in the same way - Sky on AV1 and DVD on AV2. It always selects the correct input. I just checked to confirm, if the DVD is switched off and the Sky box is switched on, and I then turn on the TV, it shows the Sky signal at start up (with the TV having been on standby, I don't turn it right off) I even tried forcing the TV to DTV while the Sky box was on, then turning the TV to standby without turning off the Sky box, and then turning the TV on again; it correctly came up on Sky (AV1) again. Are you sure the SCART control on your Sky box is set to On ? Allan |

Where do I find the SCART control for the Sky box - somewhere on Sky Settings, Tools perhaps? If that was set to off, would the Sky box still communicate with the Sony? I'm fairly sure that this has not always been an issue - maybe it has since buying the Sony (I'm too old to remember such trivia :( ) Phil |

I'm fairly sure that this has not always been an issue - maybe it has since buying the Sony (I'm too old to remember such trivia :( ) Phil I don't turn the Sony off overnight because the amount of power it consumes on standby is completely negligible (much less than the Sky box consumes when it is in its Standby condition, and much much less than leaving the Sky box switched on would do). But I've just tried it again, turning it right off by the button on the top and it still acts the same way, coming back on with the Sky signal on AV1 being displayed. The Sky box SCART setting is on "Tools", "System Setup", "Picture Settings". It needs to be set to "ON" in order that turning the box on will automatically select that input on the TV. If it is set to "OFF" the sound and picture will both work correctly but only when you manually select AV1 on the TV. On the other hand, if your Sky box selects itself if you turn it off and then on again while the TV is on, that would show that the control is correctly ON and that the SCART lead is OK too, in which case your TV is acting differently to mine and probably the only cure would be to remember always to turn the Sky box off when you turn the TV off (which also saves plenty of power) and not to turn it on again again until after you have turned the TV on. Althoug later my plan is to invest in a DVB-S2 hard disk PVR, but in the period before the analogue switchoff (2012 here) I had hoped in the meantime to be able to watch an analogue channel and record a digital channel - or vice versa, using my ancient VCR. However, after several perusals of the manual I can see nothing about such recording - apart from a note that the output would be from AV2, and that one can record what the TV is showing. So 2 questions arise: (1) Is there a way to record from the TV's analogue or digital tuner without the TV showing the picture (e.g. in standby). (2) Is there a way to record one channel (say, digital) and watch another (analogue) - or vice versa? I do hope the answer is not 'no', otherwise I shall have to bring forward my Freesat PVR plans... -- /\/\aurice (Replace "nomail.afraid" by "bcs" to reply by email) |

I've got a 23" Sony, and I seem to recall that there's a menu option to switch off the picture so you have sound only (say, when you're listening to one of the radio channels). But could be wrong. (2) Is there a way to record one channel (say, digital) and watch another (analogue) - or vice versa? I'm sure you can't (certainly not with my set). I do hope the answer is not 'no', otherwise I shall have to bring forward my Freesat PVR plans... -- Ian |

Just realised that of course I can record analogue (using the VCR's tuner) whilst watching the Sony's Freeview picture. Just tried it... Ah well, that will suffice. Anyway, I could probably hook up my old Freeview STB to the VCR and record via that, whilst viewing the TV's Freeview. -- /\/\aurice (Replace "nomail.afraid" by "bcs" to reply by email) |
