... "Steve Terry" wrote in message ... "Ian Jackson" wrote in message ... Jeremy Vine FM switch-off debate today. As usual, BBC R2, just after 1.15pm. Will be on Listen Again. Seems like the usual uninformed rubbish. Ian Simply hiding again the real political reasoning, which is that Ofcom have given up trying to police FM band 2. Moving main Broadcasters to what Ofcom believe is controllable DAB, means they can then deregulate Band 2 leaving it to Radio smackmybitchup, broadcasting from a council high rise in Peckham. There's an easy way of dealing wih the problem of pirate radio in London: move the Wrotham transmitters to Crystal Palace. There's no need for the main FM station to be out at Wrotham, and moving it means the pirates would have to compete with a 240 kW signal instead of just 4 kW from CP. That would cope with the problem for BBC Radios 1,2,3,4 and Classic FM. Increase power for the other stations like Capital FM and Heart towards the 240 kW level also and the job's done. What, repeat BBC Radios 1,2,3,4 and Classic FM every 300kHz from 87.5MHz? How else would shifting them to CP make any difference to Radio Smackmybitchup? Well, if they wanted to jam all the vacant channels in London they could do it with just one transmitter at Crystal Palace or Croydon with the same power as any of the 5 at Wrotham. It would have to specially engineered with wide bandwidth, similar to a TV transmitter, and broadcast maybe 40 spikes on the frequencies presently available to pirates. These would not have to be modulated. For an e.r.p. of 4 kW on each frequency (the same as Capital FM) a total erp of about 160 kW would be required, which is nothing very special, and no more than any one of dozens of main stations in the BBC National FM Radio network. Quite how the pirates would react I don't know. |

What about the loads of people saying leave FM alone, why weren't any of those people allowed to give their opinions on air. |
