They won't do that. Word on the street is they're keen to start up BBC1 HD, in addition to the BBC HD channel. Curiously there's about the right amount of null packets on the Astra 2D t/p that BBC HD uses too. Ok I haven't been paying proper attention, but what's this BBC B HD channel mentioned in the link you quoted in the Mendip DSO thread ? Is it a version of the BBC1 HD you mention or something else ? http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/transmitt..._groups/mendip The BBC B mux that will be carried from Mendip from April 7th, is the DVB-T2 mux that is currently being carried from Winter Hill and Crystal Palace (and a few other sites). It contains the 'Freeview HD' services, currently BBC HD and ITV 1 HD, from Easter it should also be carrying C4 HD. There was one more slot on that mux that Ofcom had advertised. C5 and C4/S4C applied to carry a service, but neither organisation could come up with a sustainable plan for a service. Therefore there's a gap. There's increasing speculation that the Beeb might grab the bandwidth to launch a BBC 1 HD service. If so, BBC HD would revert to carrying HD programming from BBC 2, 3 and 4. |

The August 2009 bit rate reduction has reduced the BBC HD quality to little better than that of SD. Big Brother has increased your chocolate ration from 30g to 15g a day |

Thanks for bringing me up to speed on that. One more twist in that story has happened today, C5 are going to launch an HD channel this year, but only on Sky, and FTV encrypted. The implication there is that they probably couldn't afford the fees the BBC were charging to include them on Mux B, but Uncle Rupert could well have given them an offer they couldn't refuse, to be made exclusively available on Sky. -- Mark Please replace invalid and invalid with gmx and net to reply. www.paras.org.uk |

Please correct me if my understanding is in error, but I thought that `five' had already applied for, and been awarded by OfCon, a licence for the reserved space for HD services on PSB-3? A quick check reveals that my recollection is not in error. http://www.ofcom.org.UK/media/news/2009/06/nr_20090611a So are they going to be handing back that licence to OfCon and will OfCon now permit other bids for that HD reserved bandwidth on PSB-3? |

This is what Ofcom said yesterday (March 16th 2010) Quote:- "Ofcom has today published its final decision on the reservation of capacity on Multiplex B for an additional High Definition (HD) service on Digital Terrestrial TV. In June 2009, Ofcom made a provisional decision to reserve a HD slot for Channel 5 Broadcasting Ltd to provide new services on Freeview from 2010. This decision was subject to it resolving certain key criteria by the end of 2009. Channel 5 Broadcasting Ltd has not been able to resolve these outstanding issues. The only other applicants, Channel 4 and S4C, were unable to provide Ofcom with confirmation of their ability to launch a service within a defined timescale. Ofcom has therefore decided not to reserve capacity for either of the applicants at this time. Any capacity within Multiplex B that is not reserved by Ofcom is available for the BBC to use. The BBC will now consider options to ensure the capacity can be used to provide High Definition services that will further benefit viewers of digital terrestrial television. This brings forward by around two years the date when it was anticipated that further capacity on Multiplex B would revert to the control of the BBC Trust. Ofcom intends next year to give the Commercial Public Service Broadcasters another opportunity to apply to provide an additional HD service from 2012.
