I skip adverts with my recorder. I don't know what the top speed is
but it's skips the adverts in a few seconds. That's way too fast for
me to stop exactly at the end of the adverts. I usually play the
adverts at 4 times normal speed.

It's worth pointing out that some recorders - such as my Humax 9200 - offer
a "skip forward" feature. Mine is set to 60 seconds, and four quick taps on
the button skips the adverts (the slots are almost always exactly four
minutes long during the evening).

The only things that don't get skipped are the "sponsored by..." adverts,
which reside in "programme time", outside of the four minute advert
interval. In that case I fast forward at 4x - it only takes a few seconds.

Sorry, I realise this isn't pertinent to Sky!

My Panasonic has a one minute skip but I don't use it much as advert
slots are not consistent. They vary quite a lot.

Well, my observation is that four quick one minute jumps, followed by a few
seconds of fast forward at 4x is by far the quickest and easiest way to skip
adverts.

Each to his own, obviously. And I do expect that advertising slots on the
minority commercial channels may well be less consistent.
