OTA can I key in channel 11.1 if scan doesn't see it?

Having OTA trouble picking up KTTV and KCOP in Los Angeles.

Been a struggle since turnover, I live in a building shadow in west
LA, but thought I had it licked, until the recent weather. Now they
tell me KTTV just increased power - but it's even worse for me.

Anyway, I thought I'd rescan, and now it can't even see 11.1, but it
picked up a new SD subchannel 11.3. So, can I key in 11.1 and the set
will know what frequency that means, or is that entirely dependent on
the scan associating a channel number and frequency?

Thanks.

This on a Sony KDL 32S3000 about 2 years old.

I believe you can key in the channel and your tuner will look there.
One set I have (if I don't get a signal) will give me a no signal
message and just sit on that channel. The other set will give me the
no signal message and then move to the nearest channel that has a
signal.

11.3 and 11.1 are on the same carrier, so it seems possible that you may have
locked 11.1 out of the available channel list in some menu somewhere.

Perhaps moving the antenna a couple of feet would help -- you may be in a
diffraction null in the shadow.

Fortunately, the digital frequency moved back to its analog. Had the
digital frequency remained somewhere else, you would have to know what
that channel was and enter it. Once the signal is picked up, the PSIP
would take over from there.

Some TVs will _only_ find stations on a scan. We have a 32" Magnavox
in the den that _says_ it will only find OTA channels on a scan BUT if
you type in the RF channel number e.g. 43 (for KCBS-2) in LA , it will
initially report ch 43 for a few seconds until it reads the PSIP data.
You can then save the channel. FYI channels 7, 9, 11, 13, 18, 28 and
34 in LA are on the actual RF channel.

It may or may not work to key in 11.1 but it should work to key in just "11". It happens 11 *is* the frequency for KTTV -- for that station and the
other six on the list Glenn posted, the frequency and the channel number are the same, no scan is necessary to get the frequency.*

After you key in "11" and KTTV comes up, it should automatically switch to 11.1. You may need to "save" the "new" channel.

For stations *not* on that list -- for example, KNBC -- you need either the scan, or to know what frequency the station is on. (for KNBC, that
frequency is "36" -- I'd bet if you key in "36" on your remote, it will sit there for 2-3 seconds and then automatically switch to 4.1 and show KNBC.)

* but you do need a scan to get the cross-reference between "program number" and "minor virtual channel" -- to get KTTV to come in on 11.1 instead of
11.3.

well, I fiddled the antenna, ran "add digital channels" several times,
and eventually it rediscovered all the major channels. phew.

Next time, see if the PSIP can do that for you. It would be a shame to
lose a channel just because it comes in weak during the next full scan.
