I flew to Jersey from Manchester last week. We took off NE-wards,
turned right, and I think went pretty well straight-ish down the
country somewhere W of the M1.

Shortly after we took off from Mcr we went over wnat I can only
assume must have been some formal gardens - a large round grass
ring with a central brown 'island.' I could not place where we
were but it was within 15 mins of takeoff on a one hour flight so
I guess it would have been within about 80 miles of the airport.
I don't think we had made flying height (18K) so it might been
even less, say somewhere in Derbyshire?

Anyone any ideas what it could have been?

Try using the CORRECT newsgroup.
This one is for digital TV, perhaps you need to need to read the title.

How big do you reckon it was? Sutton Park would be more or less in the right
place, and that's roughly circular - but it's 2 or 3 miles across. Dunno
about brown islands - it's got several lakes.

[And it's not far from the Sutton Coldfield transmitter, to bring it back on
topic g]

Failing that, why not try to trace your route on Google Earth - and see
whether you recognise anything.

Yes, I thought of that as well, and at 15K feet 2-3 miles across
would not be that big?

Unfortunately, as I said, I think he went M1-ish - that was
roughly the way we came back - but I can't be certain of the
route as I couldn't indentify any land features.

You clearly are not a regular on here are you? It is very common
to find questions about all manner of topics as there are many
wise and knowing characters lurking - indeed I got a very
sensible reply.

And the header did have a slight giveaway? TOTALLY WAY OFF
TOPIC!!!!!!

Not much use for those who filter such things. Best to use the accepted
way.

It would still look *quite* big, 'cos you're only about one diameter high.

From which side of the plane did you see it?

I thought 'TWOT' was referring to an aircraft's aviation designation code,
until I opened the post.

You're sure is wasn't Jodrell Bank, which comes into view shortly
after takeoff from Manchester?

I know that one - and it's essentially white. Funnily enough,
search the view as I may I couldn't see it, whech makes me think
we were perhaps somewhat further east than I had imagined. This
things was a green ring with a brown centre.
