Dish for freesat - DIY or get a man in?
I'm considering a Foxsat HDR , but have no dish.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of the cost to get a dish with quad LNB installed and cabled round the outside of a normal 3 bed semi to my lounge? I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying someone of buying a dish off ebay and having a go myself.... How accurate do you have to be with dish alignment for a mini-dish? I put up an old analogue Sky dish myself with nothing more than a compass to get the alignment right and that worked ok. -- Alex "I laugh in the face of danger, then I hide until it goes away" |

I did cheat and use one of the cheapo signal strength meters to peak them up, no problems at all. Apart from the cost, you have the satisfaction of DIY plus you will take more care of the fabric of your house than a 'typical' installer will. |

If you got the DIY skills have a go.
If you fail to get the best out of the dish alignment just get the man in to realign the dish. Regards David |

IMHO the more difficult bit is find the satellite in the first place. Accurate alignment is then just a matter of patience. A cheap meter with a needle and audio certainly helps. -- Michael Chare |

If it's a standard semi with a reasonable loft access, it may be quite possible to position the dish under the eaves, cable into and across the loft and then down the rear of the house into the room where the telly is housed, neater quicker and less cable used.. in my own case it was even easier, as the pipes for the central heating run from the loft through the airing cupboard and then down a false side of the living room fireplace, with access via a small removable floorboard right behind the TV, easy peasy:0) It's surprising how in 99% of cases that one is missed on my small estate of similar sixties styled housing, which is certainly a vastly better way than the alternative outside cables, holes through walls and ugly cables along skirting boards, as someone commented on here the other day, not only did they make a much neater job of re-running the cable fitted by a cowboy installer, but they actually saved a large amount of cable into the bargain! Why not put the dish on the back and save the cable losses. A dish on a pole about 1m above the gutter will see over the roof of most houses. -- Woody harrogate three at ntlworld dot com |

Anyone notice the lack of self amalgamating tape? The LNB has a sliding cover which comes down over the cable connections to shield them from the weather. This was enough to make me decide "I'll give it a few days to make sure it is all O.K. then I'll get some SAT and finish it off". Still in the manana box - must check to see if all is nice and dry in the gaps between the gales and hailstorms....... |

Why not give it a go if the intended fixing location is easily accessible for you? Get all the cables run exactly how you want and then if you can't locate the satellite and give up hope, get an installer to come and align the dish for you. The trade cost of all the parts is about £36 ish (dish with bracket / quad / cable / plugs). Obviously more if you want to mount it to look over a roof etc. I'd normally charge £150 to supply all the bits then install them - 2 feeds to the lounge. Price is the same whether it's a wall or chimney install. If you're not in the London area then you'll probably find this price will go down a bit. Gives you an idea of what the difference will be anyway. Obviously if you get an installer to do it, then you get the guarantee (if the LNB fails etc) but if the dish is easily accessible then this will be an easy fix for you in future if you go down the DIY route. |
