Just as well. I've still got find time to watch a load of video tapes of
'special 'programmes' which I recorded over the various Christmas
periods. They go back to before 1990.

What on earth is the point of transmitting programmes that *nobody*
will be able to watch?

Well there is a surprise.

Back in the day, I got hold of a Philips vcr, the big one with two mains
motors and large chunky tapes? Well, Nobody had any tapes for it for
Christmas.
Eventually that year, I knew someone who worked for 3M and they managed to
get me some.

Nothing really changes does it?

I'm sure there are prototypes out there with botched up hardware made to
work.

The BBC are good at that. Who recalls the DAB sets they 'made' out of german
car radios and boot boxes in a bbc psu box to let the public take part in
the trials.
I remember saying to the guy at the time that the low signal results were
crap, but nobody took any notice!

NOT in the UK they don't! Many existing DTT tuners (and IDTVs) can do the HD
common on *other* EU countries (DVB-T/MPEG4). None can do DVB-T2 yet!

Surely all the 'tuner' needs to be able to do is receive the signal on
the appropriate frequency and with the correct bandwidth and de-modulate
it (into a bitstream containing the MUX in these cases). It is then up
to some other component (which in the case of USB tuners could, and I
suspect probably would, be software running on the host computer) to
de-MUX the signal and decode the audio and video streams therein.

Precisely! The translation from the COFDM-encoded 8MHz bandwidth to Transport
Stream has to be done in hardware. The encoding for DVB-T2 is very different in
many ways from the current DVB-T. New DVB-T2 chipsets are being developed
and are needed before any tuners/STBs/PVRs/USB sticks/etc. for Freeview HD
can come on the market.

This is not being helped as the UK is the first (and so far only!) country
to use this new standard.

Forgive me if I don't buy a box with a rev 0 chip in.

I think it will be close to next Christmas before we see DVB-T2 boxes
with the bugs ironed out.
