USB port on DVD players

Is it normal for the usb connection on bluray/dvd players to be unable to
play video/movies, or is this connection for other purposes only?
I would like watch recorded material using this utility, but the player I
have says that this is not possible. Are there any players out there that
meet my rquirements?

If it supports playing videos over the USB port, then you also need to
ensure that the video format (codec) is supported by the DVD player.
Some support DivX, some support plain mpeg. My old DVD player could
play MPEG2 files just burned to DVD - but my new one can't, nor can it
play them on USB. However it can play DivX - though not all profiles if
I remember correctly.

My player won't play anything at via the USB port even though the player
supports most formats. It is a design problem rather than a codec one, as
the
instructions manual says the USB connection is not for video playback at
all.

I had hoped I could put some xvid movies on a memory stick, and play them
back via this connection but obviously this is not possible with my current
player.
So I take it you watch films etc, via this method on your dvd player?

I really only use the DVD player for playing DVDs and CDs. The USB port
was something I intended to use for MPEG2 files taken from my Humax PVR,
converted to DivX and then played via a USB hard disk - but I've not yet
got round to doing it. Tried a few DivX profiles but had some issues
and never tried it again yet.

I know that some people have released new firmware for my DVD player
which does more things, but again not tried anything yet. It's a
Pioneer 610AV I think.

Then you should take if back and demand a refund if the salesman misled you.
They should make a new law that salesmen have to be independent from the
company selling the products they are promoting so that for once in their
lives they can tell you the truth.

There are but you need to hunt for them.

I have a 3 year old Xoro player that will play from not only memory
sticks, but a 200GB USb FAT32 external drive.

I read the other day of a playr that will play from 2TB NTSC external
drive. Unfortunately I did not keep the link.

Try the forums at videohelp.com and they check to see if available in UK

files just burned to DVD - but my new one can't, nor can it play them
on
USB. However it can play DivX - though not all profiles if I remember
correctly.

My player won't play anything at via the USB port even though the player
supports most formats. It is a design problem rather than a codec one,
as
the
instructions manual says the USB connection is not for video playback at
all.

I had hoped I could put some xvid movies on a memory stick, and play
them
back via this connection but obviously this is not possible with my
current
player.
So I take it you watch films etc, via this method on your dvd player?

What make is your DVD player?
My Samsung can play MP3 &WMA audio, Divx/Xvid & WMV video and view
jpg, files from my 500Gb backup drive and I use this feature more often
than I use it to play DVDs.

It's a Phillips BDP3000.

According to the manualhttp://www.p4c.philips.com/files/b/bdp3000_05/bdp3000_05_dfu_eng.pdf
This product cannot play any audio/video/photo file stored on a USB
device.
Perhaps you should read it sometime.

Perhaps you should read my post above.

" instructions manual says the USB connection is not for video playback at

In this post I am asking for *advice as to whether there are any players
available

"Are there any players out there that *meet my rquirements?"

OK my bad. Apologies.
Are you actually looking for a bluray player or a DVD player as the
header suggests as the model you specified is bluray.
Most Samsung models (DVD or Bluray) are capable of USB hosting

I would like watch recorded material using this utility, but the
player
I
have says that this is not possible. Are there any players out
there
that
meet my rquirements?

If it supports playing videos over the USB port, then you also need
to
ensure that the video format (codec) is supported by the DVD player.
Some
support DivX, some support plain mpeg. My old DVD player could play
MPEG2
files just burned to DVD - but my new one can't, nor can it play
them
on
USB. However it can play DivX - though not all profiles if I

Settled on an LG BD370, which works a treat. I also got a refund from Currys
for the Phillips player so am now a happy bunny.
Thanks to all who took the time to answer my query.
