Hi
It may be that this isn't the best group for discussing the subject. If
there is a better one (uk.media.home-cinema looks dead as does
rec.video.dvd.players), let me know.
Is there much difference in the picture quality or operation between the
Sony BDPS360 and BDPS560? From my research, the older BDPS550 had the
advantage of a 7.1 analog output, but this is gone on the 560. Couldn't care
less about WiFi.
It'd be driving a Panasonic HD (720p) projector with about 100" diagonal
image, if that makes any difference.

I've no experince with the Sony stuff, but if you are looking for a
top-end BD player, then you probably should consider the OPPO BDP-83.

I have a Sony (BDP-S350) and I'm not that impressed with it. It is SO
SLOW loading BR disks and has a poor user interface.

I would never have thought of using a "games" unit but now I have had
time to play with a Playstation 3 it is so flexible and does so many
things well, I would certainly buy one. One big annoyance for me as an
installer was that it would only output sound to one set of outputs at
a time so it was difficult to set it up as an audio "jukebox" and to
feed an HDMI TV etc all at once but the recent software download has
fixed that.
Very good Blue Ray player, and picture viewer and pretty good iPlayer
as well.

The PS3 won't, which as far as I'm concerned is it's only downside.

You can get some players that are multi-region for DVD and a few that
are for both DVD and BD, but they are definitely in the minority. Have a
look at somewhere like www.multiregionmagic.co.uk (no connection, other
than having bought a DVD player off them years ago, but thinking of
getting a multi-region BD player off them at some stage).

Its a kid's games machine for heavens sake.

OPPO BD83 gets closer than anything else.

I should think the PS3's power consumption would be considerably
higher than a dedicated BR player.

All the multi-region BD players I've seen are about £150 more than simple
Zone B models, it may be cheaper to import a Zone A player from the US and
have one of each.

It does make me wonder if BD zoning was a genuine attempt to combat piracy
or just a convenient way to make a bit of extra cash for the player
manufacturers.

That's an issue I've got with something else - an original XBOX
installed just for running XMBC.

At the moment it's very well hidden away when my young nephew visits,
for otherwise he'll soon be pestering for playing games on it. This (and
fan noise issues) almost invites me to consider recasing it in something
more suitable ...

.... but for the effort in doing that I may as well build myself a proper
media PC server.

Or the other plan is to leave it as it is so that when he eventually
sees it, those games on the XBOX will be so uncool he'll no longer have
an interest in playing them!

Route all my BD audio to my amp via HDMI, doesn't bitstream it (the new
slimmer version does, I believe) only downside to that is I don't get
the nice "True HD" or "DTS HD-MA" indicators lighting up on my amp :-)
Still sounds the same though, so no problem.

I know a lot of people say this, but I must have got lucky, as it's
pretty much silent, can't hear it at all unless I go right up to it.
Maybe the fan isn't working ;-)

Its a kid's games machine for heavens sake.

It loads a hell of a lot quicker than the Samsung standalone that I had
previously, it plays everything I've thrown at it with no problems at
all (unlike the Sammy) and it's handy for streaming all sorts of
downloaded stuff too. Far from just a "kid's games machine" IMO.

Some of these could have changed with the latest version I've not checked.

That's exactly what it is IMO. A lot of discs are region-free anyway.

I'd thought about going the two player route myself, but it'd be so much
more hassle should anything go wrong with the Region A model and to be
honest, I doubt you'd get much for £150 anyway, especially if you have
to take import duty etc... into account.

I'm sure it's less power hungry than its predecessor, but more power
hungry than a standalone player. For example:

Does the PS3 have a dedicated decoder chip or is it all done in software on
the main CPUs? If it doesn't then it would use more power to play a disc.

I *really* dislike the lack of a power button on the remote.

If the screen's been powered down, you have to try to remember an
obscure sequence of keystrokes, ( pres-'n'-hold the PS button, X, X. :
obvious, huh? )which sometimes doesn't work: it depends what state it
was left in.

It's like trying to power-down a PC using the mouse, blind.

Like a PC, you can force a shutdown by holding the power button on the
console till it beeps and finally gives in.

But really: I expect a power ( or stby ) button on the remote of a BD
player!
