Freeview EPG gone AWOL

Yesterday, I lost the EPG in a Digilogic Freeview box. Instead, when I
switch on, I get the following message:

"Your TV guide is currently not loaded. Please leave your set-top box
in standby when not in use, _including overnight_. Otherwise, you will
see this message each time you power cycle your set-top box, you will
also lose your TV guide. Your set-top box will now download the service.
Press Guide now to start the download, or press Menu to go to the TV. "

There is a time-out for the button press, but I don't know what happens
by default.

Problem is, the last time I accepted a download for this box (years
ago), I ended up with some Virgin media branded nonsense for the EPG.
I was able to get rid of it (IIRC) by not leaving the box in standby
overnight. I don't get the above message with my other Freeview box
(same make and model, different internals), and I don't see the download
listed in the DTG schedule...

It might be a branded box which is listed as the other name maybe?

Generally the EPG is downloaded daily around 3am.

That is very similar to what I saw on my Bush DFTA11 yesterday.

That box has an option in the Configuration menu for the EPG to show Now
and Next, the standard 7-day EPG or a Teletext 14-day guide.

I had been using the standard 7-day EPG but I decided to look at the
14-day one and saw just the sort of messages you saw.

The Teletext Extra EPG screen has "Teletext Extra" and a shallow advert
panel at the top. The programme table is below that. Below the table at
the moment is a Virgin 1 advert.

What you describe suggests your box might be using the Teletext 14-day
guide. Is there a choice in the configuration menu?

I didn't look at the EPG options or do anything that would explain the
change in behaviour.

That's roughly what I recall seeing the last time the box prompted me
for an "upgrade", but I refuse to have a Virgin advert on my EPG!

What you describe suggests your box might be using the Teletext 14-day
guide. Is there a choice in the configuration menu?

There was no such option in the configuration menu when the box was new
- I've just checked the manual and screen-shots - but it's there now.
Evidently a software update has taken place and the box switched itself
to the 14-day Teletext guide. I've just turned it off and my EPG has
returned to normal - without leaving the box on standby overnight...

That may well be the case with the 14-day "teletext" EPG but it doesn't
seem to apply to the "standard" version. I always have my Freeview box
turned off at the mains overnight, but still get the 7-day EPG. Earlier
today, after I changed the setting, I could see the EPG being updated.

I wonder how much the remnants of teletext pay the software writers to make
these things default to their advert infested output though?
grin..
