According to this there are still stocks of these and I know they do
have switch on and off timers.

have switch on and off timers.

Note that there is an integrated 80Gb pvr with this model. It only has
a single tuner but I have plenty of experience of these and they do a
great job for a bedroom set and the sound is very good for a small
set.

Looking for a 15 inch LCD TV for the bedroom.

The current arrangement is an analogue set connected to a plug-in
mains timer. This switches on at 06:45 and thereby acts as our alarm.

I bought a Goodmans LD1546WD set on the basis of what was on the Comet
site, i.e. that it has an on/off timer. Well, it doesn't. If I connect
it to the existing mains timer it switches on into standby mode, which
is useless for my purpose. Is this typical of LCD sets? My only
experience is with our Philips Ambilight.

Does anyone know of a set that would do what I want, i.e. switch on
into proper ON mode?

BTW, I can't access any of the Goodmans product pages, I get the
message: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration
file required to service this request. ( Using XP Home SP3, IE6)

If you use a mains timer most current TVs will come back on in stanby mode,
if the TV has a timer just leave it plugged in to the mains all the time.

That is what I intended to do, but the TV hasn't got a timer, despite
the spec on the website.

The timers on the sets that I've seen are for sending your chosen
channel down the scart to your VCR/PVR for scheduled recording.

They do this in standby.

You wouldn't want it to come on if you were recording something when
you were asleep.

So in fact it does what it's meant to, but not what you want it to.

The spec states quite clearly that it's about a timer for switching the
set on and off. See http://tinyurl.com/nham56

I agree, that's misleading by not being specific.

I went to the Goodmans support site, and as often seems to happen, your
TV is not in their database.

Of course a Google search brings up plenty of sellers, and the usual
batch of lying *******s who suck your search criteria into the link to
their website.

I think its a misunderstanding of what the timer was for.

The website shows that it has an "On/ / off timer". Hovering over the
i-in-a-square shows "Enables the television to be preset to switch on and
off". I can't see much scope for misunderstanding there.

You said in your original post that you used a mains timer, you can't
expect an onboard timer to work without power. BTW this sets is not 16:9
it is 16:10, therefore in my opinion is not fit for purpose.

Rubbish - it is presumably 1920 x 1200 or some proportion thereof and also
usable as a monitor.

My monitor is 1920x1200. I find it vaguely annoying that there are
black stripes top and bottom when watching TV, but I put up with it
because it isn't intended as a TV.

16:10 for a specialised TV is just silly. As is 768 lines...

You didn't even bother to check the resolution before making your ridiculous
statement, it is in fact 1280x800, fine for a small monitor but _not_ for a
television which is what it is sold as.
