The website shows that it has an "On/ / off timer". Hovering over the
i-in-a-square shows "Enables the television to be preset to switch on
and off". I can't see much scope for misunderstanding there.

If you use a mains timer most current TVs will come back on in stanby mode,
if the TV has a timer just leave it plugged in to the mains all the time.

That is what I intended to do, but the TV hasn't got a timer, despite
the spec on the website.

The timers on the sets that I've seen are for sending your chosen
channel down the scart to your VCR/PVR for scheduled recording.

They do this in standby.

You wouldn't want it to come on if you were recording something when
you were asleep.

So in fact it does what it's meant to, but not what you want it to.

The spec states quite clearly that it's about a timer for switching the

Take a look at this 16" Alba £99 from Argos, OK for bedroom and it has
a timer. You have to put some black tape over the very bright blue LED
standby light though. It flashes brightly during the night if they do
a download. Thought it was a police raid the first time it hapened !

You said in your original post that you used a mains timer, you can't expect
an onboard timer to work without power. BTW this sets is not 16:9 it is
16:10, therefore in my opinion is not fit for purpose.

What Peter wants used to exist, I used a JVC 21F1 with a timer to wake me up
in the morning. Obviously that would be far to big and old for his
requirements.

That one only has a sleep timer, not a switch on timer. Apart from that it's
a nice little set, my aunt has one in her kitchen. Proper 16:9 too.

If the set had a built-in timer I wouldn't need the plugin. OTOH I would
use the existing plugin if the set had no timer of its own and came on
when power was applied, instead of going into standby.

To the OP: you can get third party remotes with a built in clock
that lets you use it to program recording. It can also switch on
a TV.
