Ads on guide screen
I went to John Lewis today, because I was thinking of getting a new
Panasonic television. Only a couple of them had remotes so that I could actually try looking at different channels. But when I looked at the guide about a third of the screen was occupied by an advertisement! What's more, I couldn't find any way to get rid of it. Naturally there were no staff around to answer questions. Where do these ads come from? Who is getting paid for them? Can they be switched off? If I pay about a thousand popunds for a TV I don't expect to have to put up with ads just to change channels, quite apart from it wasting much of the display space - it shows fewer channels, and a smaller time range, than my existing TV. Is this just a Panasonic thing? -- Richard -- Please remember to mention me / in tapes you leave behind. |

Is this just a Panasonic thing? -- Richard My panasonic TV has these ads. My panasonic PVR has the same guide but without the ads. On the TV they just squeeze up the text to make space for the ad - there is the same info on both screens. The ads come over the freeview datastream. I don't know who pays. I guess panasonic pay a licence per tv sold to whoever provides the TV guide info and maybe the licence is cheaper if they take the ads. The TV handbook states that the Ads are based upon the postcode you configure into the TV during setup. I've never tried to put in a duff postcode or no code at all to see if anything changes but I do remember that for the first couple of days the space for the ads just contained the "viera" logo presumably until it had download the ads. I've had the TV about 3 months now and the ads always seem to be for Radio Times or other BBC magazines. Chris |

Is this just a Panasonic thing? The facility is on my new 42" Panasonic. I have no idea why, what, whatever - I will ask on Avforums. I can't see any way to turn it off - just to select targetted adverts by inputting your postcode. |

Is this just a Panasonic thing? -- Richard This is probably the 4tv guide (I think that's the name), you get 14 days and they pay the manufacturer for putting the software into their product. Same thing happened on the Setpals, which previously didn't have the 7 days epg, due to lack of support/going bust etc. It is only broadcast on one mux and must be updated during the night + you get adverts. There is a 7 day epg that is free (well covered by TV licence I suppose) its free for any manufacturer to use on Freeview and transmitted continuously on all muxes. Not sure where the law stands on it being forced on you, but most do have an off selection or an ability to select the normal 7 day epg. On Freesat I think there is a deal manufacturers have to sign up to otherwise you can't get the epg, but its more to control the manufacturers so that they play ball with content protection. -- Tony |

It seems they are doing everything they can to turn away customers, then! Yes. Panasonic is no longer on my "maybe" list for a newer, larger, TV sometime. -- Peter Duncanson (in uk.tech.digital-tv) |

It is a minor irritant in an otherwise outsdtanding TV. Also, I think that a lot of users will have Sky or Virgin feeds and so not use the Freeview as their main system. I wonder if there is any measurement of 'click through' for the adverts? If so, perhaps the advertisers will abandon the service after a while. |
