Echostar T-101
Echostar have finally redeemed themselves in my eyes.
After both my T-101 Freeview boxes were rendered virtually useless last year when the NIT split, I gave up waiting for them to do anything useful and emailed them chasing things up. They asked me to send them back to them at my expense, but sent them back fully working within three days at their expense. Whilst this should never have been necessary they are far more customer focused than Humax, who are still ignoring the problems I am having with my integrated TV! |

Perhaps the copy of the note to Humax below will explain. They haven't responded to three emails, a letter and a fax over an 8 month period: "I bought a Humax LGB - 17 DTTV in October 2006. When we first starting using the TV, it would often "hang" when switching on if left in DTTV mode. Analogue has never given a problem. After a few weeks the problem got better, although occasionally I still had to unplug the set and enable it to re-boot before DTTV could be used. In the past few weeks the problem has returned, and now after switching from standby, I have to unplug it about 50% of the time and wait for it to go through the "loading" screens before DTTV will work. The TV is used on the Sutton Coldfield transmitter, signal strength averages 100% and signal quality about 87%. I don't unplug it at night as I understand software updates are sometimes provided. I would be grateful for any thoughts or comments you could give on solving this problem please? It's spoiling what is otherwise an excellent product." I also bought it because at the time it was one of the few digital LCD sets - I'm now considering binning it and getting another Panny. |

As soon as this happened we stopped using them as it was just too irritating. |

All you would need to do is tune to a station that's broadcast from the proper mux and you should get the update. |

Its a pity nobody puts a way to connect these boxes to a computer so you could update the software from the companys web sites. Some boxes allow this - but then the firmware on the company's web site may not be the best one to install :( -- Alan news2009 {at} admac {dot} myzen {dot} co {dot} uk |

I bought mine because of the 'good' name and that it was available in the size I wanted - 24". It wasn't cheap. It's normally used as a monitor being fed from the Toppy next door so I can wander from living room to kitchen while cooking etc without the sound delays you get from separate FreeView tuners. But when I use it as an ordinary FreeView set it's fine too. Picture is as good as any LCD I've seen. Don't use the internal speakers. Only real niggle is it doesn't have a fixed audio line out on phonos - you have to use the headphone socket. But the quality from that is ok. We have dealt with hundreds of Humax TVs. (They have now stopped
making them) The trouble was that there was little continuity. The good models were superb with excellent sound and a picture with fewer digital artefacts and fuzz than almost any other. Some of the 26" and 32" models were incredibly solid and well put together. My own set is a 32" single tuner with integrated PVR. The 40" had better sound than any other TV I have ever heard, and a decent picture and built-in hard drive but awful, unreliable and often unusable software.. The older bad models had less than good picturers, were quirky and generally odd but excellently built!! The more recent 19" and 22" sets with the seperate speaker under the screen generally gave better results than most other makes and some had integrated DAB radio or a plug-in mini hard drive which also worked well. Like most smaller screen sets, the vertical viewing angle was not good but the same basic model without the larger speaker had painfully awful sound with no bass whatsoever. We have found Humax service to be very good and guarantee service to be very eficient. USUALLY! But its all just personal opinion.......! Interestingly, JVC now make two models (32" and 26") which have integrated PVR hard drives and almost exactly the same menus and operating system as the Humax Freeview PVRs and they seem to work very well, especially for older people who appreciate the all-in-one arrangement with one handset. |

Any clues please anyone? You have a single quote ' character in your email address. It is not outlook that is complaining, but news.eternal-september.org. It is running a perl script that is accessing a MySQL server and performing an SQL query involving your email address without escaping special characters (despite the inbuilt features of the Perl DBD module designed to avoid this very problem). As a result it chokes and sends Outlook the error message, which fails to understand it and reports an error. However this is clearly either happening after the message is posted, or is being ignored by the server. If you wish to be able to post through that server right now, I suggest you remove the quotes from your email address and try again. However, this means that the news server is almost certainly vulnerable to an SQL injection attack. So, if you wish to be able to post through that server in the future, I suggest you email their support somewhat urgently and inform them that their service is highly insecure, before someone does something unpleasant to their server (e.g., deleting their database, stealing the usernames/passwords from their database, or potentially worse). -- David Taylor |

Many thanks, this has happened since 'eternal-september' superseded 'motzarella', they do appear to have a number of support NGs so I will ask there. I also have a Virgin/Blueyonder newsreader, the problem with that however is that they include posters IP address in the properties, which I don't happen to think is exactly a good idea, is there any good reason 'why' they insist on doing this, when hardly any other provider does? |

But now s/he seems to be overwhelmed by their own competence. The only thing you can possibly abuse this bug for is to receive syntax errors from the database, which is bad enough, but there is certainly no way you could execute any SQL statements on the database other than the ones that are contained in the Perl filter. Before the script is called, the From: header is checked for a valid internet mail address by the news server, the script then parses the header for a valid mail address and extracts it. So there is no way to put SQL statements in your From: header without either the server or the script rejecting your post because of an invalid syntax in your mail address. Besides, the database user used by the script only has SELECT, INSERT and UPDATE privileges for some tables in the database, it can not drop databases or tables or delete information from the tables. Usernames/passwords are of course not cotained in the database, authentication data resides in a separate LDAP server. The MySQL database is only used for persistent information on the number of different mail addresses used by each user, the M-IDs of their articles, in case they want to cancel any of them and the number of connects per day. -- Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a Banana. http://www.eternal-september.org |
